S355JR Steel Column Design Assignment

The document outlines an assignment with three questions related to structural engineering, specifically focusing on selecting suitable steel column sections in grade S355JR for various loading conditions. Question 1 involves a 10 m long column with specific axial and bending loads, while Question 2 pertains to a 3.5 m long column with different ultimate design loads. Question 3 requires checking the adequacy of a 203 x 203 x 46 H-section steel beam-column under given moments and compression forces.

ECSRD4A: ASSIGNMENT 1 (Due: 11/08/2025)

Question 1
Select a suitable column section in grade S355JR steel to support a factored axial concentric
load of 2000 kN and factored bending moments of 100 kNm about the major axis, and 20 kNm
about the major axis as shown in Figure 1, applied at both ends of the column. The column is
10 m long and is fully fixed against rotation at top and bottom, and the floors it supports are
braced against sway.

Question 2
Select a suitable column I-section in grade S355JR steel to support the following ultimate
design loads:
Axial compressive load: 750 kN
Bending moments:
Top: about the major axis = 160 kNm (clockwise)
about the minor axis = 60 kNm (clockwise)
Bottom about the major axis = 230 kNm (clockwise)
about the minor axis = 55 kNm (clockwise)
The column is 3.5 m long and is braced about the minor axis only.
Question 3
A 203 x 203 x 46 H-section Grade S355JR steel is used for a simply supported 6 m long beam-
column in braced frame. No restraints are provided between the ends. Factored ultimate
moments of 45 kNm and 10 kNm (single curvature bending) are applied about both axes at
both ends. A factored ultimate compression force of 200 kN is also applied. Check the
adequacy of the section.
