Here’s a clear and simple guide to the rules of handball (indoor team handball, the Olympic sport —

not the wall game version):

1. Objective of the Game

Two teams of 7 players each (6 court players + 1 goalkeeper) try to score by throwing the ball into
the opponent’s goal.

 The team with the most goals after the match wins.

2. Court & Equipment

 Court Size: 40 m × 20 m.

 Goal Area: A 6 m radius around each goal — only the goalkeeper is allowed inside.

 Ball Size:

o Men: Circumference ~58–60 cm.

o Women: Circumference ~54–56 cm.

3. Match Duration

 Adults: 2 halves of 30 minutes each, 10-minute halftime.

 Youth: Shorter halves depending on age.

4. Starting Play

 Match starts with a throw-off from center court.

 After each goal, the opposing team restarts with a throw-off.

5. Basic Playing Rules

 Players can:

o Hold the ball for up to 3 seconds.

o Take up to 3 steps without dribbling.

o Dribble like in basketball (bounce and move).

 After dribbling stops, a player cannot dribble again (double dribble = foul).

 Ball can be passed, thrown, or bounced in any direction.

6. Scoring
 1 goal each time the ball fully crosses the opponent’s goal line inside the frame.

7. Goal Area Rules

 Only the goalkeeper is allowed inside the 6 m goal area.

 Field players may jump into the area only if they release the ball before landing.

 If a defending player enters the area illegally, a penalty throw is given.

8. Fouls & Penalties

 Fouls include:

o Pushing, hitting, tripping, or holding an opponent.

o Pulling the ball out of hands with excessive force.

 Referee may give:

o Free Throw (minor foul).

o 7 m Throw (penalty throw for major fouls or illegal blocks).

o 2-Minute Suspension (player sits out, team plays with 6 players).

o Disqualification (Red Card) for serious offenses.

9. Winning the Game

 Team with the most goals at the end wins.

 If tied, extra time or shootout may be used in knockout matches.
