Axial Capacity of Sheathed 2x4 Wall

The document outlines the design and analysis of a sheathed 2x4 stud wall subjected to out-of-plane wind loading, including calculations for axial capacity, bending, shear, and combined loading checks. It uses specific material properties and wind load formulas to determine the wall's capacity and ensures that the design meets safety standards. The results indicate that the wall design is adequate under the specified loads.

Find the axail capacity (plf) of a sheathed 2x4 stud wall subjected to out of plane wind loading. Assume axial loads come from the D + L cas
Wind comes from Exposure B in SLO area Use DF-L #2 for studs

2x4 @ 16” o/c

½” CDX 8 ft

Loads

Wind loads will come from C&C provisions of IBC.

Pnet = λ  Kzt  Iw  Pnet30

The effevtive area being loaded is (8ft)(16"/12") ~ 10 ft2. Walls sections of walls near the edge of a building are
called Zone5.

Pnet30 for Zone 5, with 10 ft2 of effective area, and a wind speed of 85mph = 13psf to -17.4psf

With Exposure B and a height of the house ~ 30ft  = 1.0

Pnet = λ  Kzt  Iw  Pnet30 = ( 1.0)  ( 1.0)  ( 1.0)  17.4psf

Changing it to a line load

W  16in  17.4psf ---> W  23.2  plf
