QUESTION BANK GRADE XII

Previous Year CBQ

Read the following paragraphs and answer the questions that follow.
A galvanometer is an instrument used to show the direction and strength of the current passing
through it. In a galvanometer, a coil placed in a magnetic field experiences a torque and hence gets
deflected when a current passes through it. The name is derived from the surname of
Italian scientist L. Galvani, who in 1791 discovered that electric current makes a dead frog’s leg
jerk. a spring attached with the coil provides a counter torque.
In equilibrium, the deflecting torque is balanced by the restoring torque of the spring and we have:
𝑵𝑩𝑨𝑰 = 𝒌𝝓
where N is the total number of turns in the coil
A is the area of cross-section of each turn
B is the radial magnetic field
k is the torsional constant of the spring
ϕ is the angular deflection of the coil
As the current (Ig) which produces full scale deflection in the galvanometer is very small, the
galvanometer cannot as such be used to measure current in electric circuits. A small resistance,
called shunt, of a suitable value is connected with the galvanometer to convert it into an ammeter
of desired range. By using a higher resistance, a galvanometer can also be converted into a
voltmeter. 2025
A. The value of the current sensitivity of a galvanometer is given by:
𝑘 𝑁𝐵𝐴 𝑘𝐵𝐴 𝑘𝑁𝐵
a) 𝑁𝐵𝐴 b) 𝑘 c) 𝑁 d) 𝐴

B. A galvanometer of resistance 6Ω shows full scale deflection for a current of 0·2 A. The value
of shunt to be used with this galvanometer to convert it into an ammeter of range (0 5 A) is:
a) 0.25Ω b) 0.30Ω c) 0.50Ω d) 6.0Ω
C. The value of resistance of the ammeter in case (ii) will be:
a) 0.20Ω b) 0.24Ω c) 6.0Ω d) 6.25Ω
D. A galvanometer is converted into a voltmeter of range (0 − 𝑉) by connecting with it, a
resistance 𝑅1 . If 𝑅1 is replaced by 𝑅2 , the range becomes (0 − 2 𝑉). The resistance of the
galvanometer is:

The torque (τ) on a current-carrying loop in a magnetic field is given by the equation τ = nIABsinα, where n is the number of turns, I is the current, A is the area of the loop, B is the magnetic field, and α is the angle between the normal to the loop and the magnetic field. The torque is maximized when the loop is perpendicular to the magnetic field (α = 90 degrees or sinα = 1), giving τ_max = nIAB .

The magnetic force on a charged particle moving with velocity v parallel to a wire carrying current I is F = qvB, where B is the magnetic field created by the wire. The force is perpendicular to both the velocity and magnetic field direction, affecting the particle's trajectory. The path can be straight or circular based on initial velocity and magnetic field orientation .

Increasing the solenoid's turn radius affects the magnetic field minimally if the coil remains long relative to the diameter. Doubling the length and total turns maintains the field strength, as the field inside a solenoid is defined by B = μ₀nI (where n is number of turns per unit length) and remains unaffected by radius or physical length modifications if n is maintained .

A moving coil galvanometer operates on the principle that a current-carrying coil in a magnetic field experiences a deflecting torque, proportional to the current passing through it. This torque causes angular deflection, which is counteracted by a torsional spring, allowing it to measure small currents accurately by correlating deflection with current magnitude .

The magnetic field (B) at a distance x from the center of a circular loop of radius a carrying current I is derived using the Biot-Savart Law. The expression is B = (μ₀Ia²)/(2(x² + a²)^(3/2)), directed along the axis of the loop .

The gyromagnetic ratio is the ratio of the magnetic moment to the angular momentum (L) of a system. It is significant as it helps describe the intrinsic properties of particles like electrons, relating magnetic properties to mechanical motion. For a revolving electron, the magnetic moment M is given by M = (e/2me)L, where e is the charge and me is the electron mass .

An ideal ammeter has zero resistance and is connected in series, minimizing the influence on circuit current. An ideal voltmeter has infinite resistance and is connected in parallel, ensuring negligible current and accurate voltage measurement. Practical devices approximate these conditions with low resistance shunts and high resistance series connections, respectively .

The magnetic force F on a wire of length L carrying current I in a magnetic field B is given by F = ILBsinθ, where θ is the angle between the wire and the magnetic field. Force magnitude depends on current, wire length, field strength, and orientation relative to the field. Maximum force occurs when the wire is perpendicular to the field (θ = 90°).

A moving coil galvanometer is sensitive to small currents and has a deflecting torque proportional to the current. It isn't used directly due to its sensitivity and low current rating. To measure larger currents, a low-resistance shunt is connected in parallel, converting it into an ammeter while preserving the instrument's accuracy .

The magnetic dipole moment M of an electron orbiting a nucleus is given by M = evr/2, where e is electron charge, v its velocity, and r the orbit radius. This is significant as it demonstrates the electron’s orbital motion contributing to its magnetic properties, analogous to current in a loop, and affects magnetic interactions at atomic levels .
