MEIR12 ENGINEERING GRAPHICS

Welcome you all

Presented by

Dr. Sevugan Rajkannu J,

Assistant Professor

Department of Civil Engineering

National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli – 620015
Engineering
Engineering is the application of science and mathematics to solve
problems.
Science + Mathematics = (USE) Application
What is the Role of Engineers?
Civil Engineers are involved in the planning, design, drawing,
construction, maintenance and inspection of large Civil
Infrastructure projects, including Building, Roads, Railways,
Bridges, Airport, Tunnels and Dams.

What is the purpose of drawing
Human beings have certain basic needs.
We must have, Water, and Shelter to survive.

OBJECTIVES
1. Irrespective of engineering discipline, it has become mandatory to know the
basics of Engineering Graphics.
2. The student is expected to possess the efficient drafting skill depending on
the operational function in order to perform day to day activity.
3. Provide neat structure of industrial drawing.
4. Enables the knowledge about position of the component and its forms
Interpretation of technical graphics assemblies.
5. Preparation of machine components and related parts.

COURSE CONTENT
1. Fundamentals Drawing standard - BIS, dimensioning, lettering, type of lines,
scaling- conventions.
2. Orthographic projection Introduction to orthographic projection, drawing
orthographic views of objects from their isometric views - Orthographic projections
of points lying in four quadrants.
Orthographic projection of lines parallel and inclined to one or both planes
Orthographic projection of planes inclined to one or both planes. Projections of
simple solids – axis perpendicular to HP, axis perpendicular to VP and axis inclined
to one and both planes.
3. Sectioning of solids Section planes perpendicular to one plane and parallel or
inclined to other plane.
4. Intersection of surfaces Intersection of cylinder & cylinder, intersection of cylinder
& cone, and intersection of prisms.
5. Development of surfaces Development of prisms, pyramids and cylindrical &
conical surfaces. Isometric and perspective projection Isometric projection and
isometric views of different planes and simple solids, introduction to perspective
projection.

Introduction

The art of representation of an object by the

artist by his imagination or by keeping the
object before him.
Example : Paintings, Cinema posters,
Advertisement boards, etc.

An Engineering Drawing is a technical drawing which clearly defines and communicates

a design to other parties.

The art of representing of Engineering objects such as buildings, roads, machines, etc.
on the paper is called engineering drawing.

Roll of engineering graphics
Visualization
• Ability to mentally picture things that do not exist.
Communication
• The design solution should be communicated without
ambiguity.
Documentation
• Permanent record of the solution

Engineering Drawing
The engineering drawing can be divided from engineering point of view into
following categories.
1. Geometrical Drawing : Rectangle, Square, cube, cone,
cylinder…
(i) Plane Geometrical Drawing : Two Dimensional
(ii) Solid Geometrical Drawing : Three Dimensional
2. Civil Engineering Drawing
3. Mechanical Engineering Drawing
4. Electrical and Electronics Engineering Drawing etc..
