DREAMS
It was exactly 9:30.
The conditions were perfect, it was a slightly cool night, the fan was on at max
power, and I had taken a shower before hand.
It was time to sleep.
I pulled up my blanket, and closed my eyes. I started to drift into sleep.
I was in a lab. I was mixing what appeared to be strawberry jam, melatonin, and
phosphorous in a test tube. There was a slab of cancerous flesh on a plate near me.
I dropped several vials of the mixture onto the flesh. I pulled out a microscope
and observed the cells began to cure. I had made some sort of cure. Was it the cure
to cancer?
I was scared to test it, the mixture had no compounds or elements that seemed
medically adept for curing cancer. I reached for a notebook. I read my previous
notes on what I was doing, I was creating Ambrosine, a compound creating by heating
strawberry jam and melatonin specifically with fire from phosphorous.
A ray of light shot onto my face. I took the blanket off my body and switched off
the fan. It was the weekend, I had nothing I need to do.
I grabbed some ignited red phosphorous from a flaming lighter, mixed it with
strawberry jam from the fridge, and mixed some ground up melatonin from the pantry.
I put it all in a small plastic bag and went to work.
I work as a neurosurgeon, and luckily, I was dealing with a cancerous tumor.
As I drove to the hospital, I stuffed my bag into my undershirt.
I walked into the hospital, and after checking in, properly sanitizing, and after
properly collecting sterile equipment, I walked into the operating room.
The old man was in critical condition, even If we could properly excise the tumor
in his brain, it was likely he would die.
The pulled out the bag and lifted it above the tumor.
The other surgeons attempted to stop me.
It was too late, I dripped a bit of the substance on the tumor.
It appeared to heal.
The surgeons panicked at first, but they were eventually amazed. I was celebrated,
the old man's daughter thanked me, I had discovered a cure to cancer. I was ready
to test on more types of cancer.
The next day I was allowed to test my concoction on several different tumors (the
hospital would rather have me do it so if it fails, it's on me.)
I tested it on skin, heart, brain, and lung cancer cells. It worked flawlessly.
People began to question what the concoction was. I refused to tell.
I planned to sell my idea, and change the world.
I went to bed that night, but I had some trouble sleeping. After an hour, I finally
began drift into a peaceful slumber.
I woke up with several jars filled with Ambrosine, I took a walk, and then drove to
the bank. I parked my car in the road across, and stepped out of the car.
BANG.
I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
I woke up with a start. I was drenched with sweat; who would want to kill me? Why?
I breathed deeply, and went back to sleep.
I was filling jars with ambrosine, but after I was done, I noticed a small red
flash in the fan light near me. I suddenly cut to black, and then saw myself in a
factory making bullet proof vests. It was cold, and I was wearing thick coats and
gloves. I looked on a reflective sign; I looked completely different. More
importantly, the sign said, "↓ВЫХОД↓," or ↓EXIT↓. Where did I learn to read
Russian? More importantly, was I in Russia? It appears that I was painting in red
paint,"ПРОТИВ ОРУЖИЯ," or against weapons. I pulled a small plastic gun out of my
pocket. The guards outside had metal detectors, and the plastic guns were fragile
and single use, but could bypass the technology. I kept a bullet in a pendant on my
neck, disguising the metal as part of the jewelry.
I quickly loaded the gun, and shot it at the vest. Writing "against weapons"
appears to have made it invincible to weapons. The bullet lost all velocity before
even hitting the vest, and it strangely looked dented after landing on the floor. I
was about to put on the vest, but a guard heard my gun fire, and yelled,"он
вооружен!" I was shot in the head.
I woke up at 7:30 that morning, and got ready to prepare some Ambrosine, and go get
a bank loan to start selling. I then remembered the fan. I grabbed a hammer from
the garage and shattered the light. As expected, there was a small black device
with a blinking red light. It was a camera. I shattered it, before getting to work
on making more ambrosine. I filled 5 bags worth of it.
I then drove to the nearby gun shop and bought a Kevlar vest. I went back home, and
painted ПРОТИВ ОРУЖИЯ onto the vest. I wore it before going to bank. As I stepped
out of the car, I felt a light tap on my chest. The bullets simply bounced off my
body. I ran into the bank, collected the loan, and ran out. My car had been shot up
and exploded.
Before I could react, I was knocked out.
I woke up, chained in a dark stone chamber. The chains were wrapped around my body,
and had a strange purple glow to them. A man walked in. He wore a black suit, he
had clean brown hair, and smooth leather shoes. I assure you this man was a demon.
He had no shine in his eyes, the shadows on his body were too dark, his perfect
smile too perfect.
"Hello Caleb Riesman."
"Where am I, what is this?"
"You are in a spectral prison, and you are currently being interrogated by the
Dreamers of the Universe."
"Who are they?"
He paused and his smile widened.
"So many questions. You have gained too much power. Humans are not meant to be able
to gain such power from the dream state."
"W-what do you mean?"
"This is your official warning to stop whatever you are doing. You are an error.
You are an anomaly. This was not meant to happen. If you follow through with what
you are doing, there will be dire consequences."
I jumped awake. I got out of bed, and saw the bags of ambrosine lined on the
kitchen counter. I would not stop what I was doing.
In a matter of a few months, I became a billionaire. I permanently changed the
world, and fascinated the scientific community. I was rich. I was famous. I was a
hero.
Then everything fell apart.
I fell asleep one night, and then I saw the demon with a man's skin. Same black
suit, same brown hair, same menacing smile. This time I was at a table. A light
glared at my face.
"We warned you."
I then had flashes of shadowy creatures with glowing white eyes bursting from the
Earth, fire spreading all around, innocents dying.
Slowly, people in my company began to missing. It started with interns. Then
janitors. Then managers. People all around the world started noticing their devices
glitching with black splotches appearing on their screens. People and buildings
began to disappear. Big Ben. The Burj Khalifa. The White House. The world was
falling apart.
Finally, a magnitude 9.8 occurred in Japan, the Earth split in half, and demons
appeared from the Earth.
I panicked. I popped a melatonin pill, wondering if I had the answer. I saw one
thing in shaky letters. RUN.
There was nothing I could do.
Shadowy black demons ran across the Earth, murdering everything in their path,
soaking their hands in dark human blood. I hid for months until one day.
I was locked in a nuclear vault with 10 other people, I had enough rations for
years. That was until the man walked in.
As I suspected, he was a demon. Freakishly tall, same pure white smile, perfect
brown hair, his suit seemed like part of his skin, his leather shoes stained with
blood.
He killed the others, and then chased me down. He caught me and knocked me down.
"Why?"
"Dreams. Dreams are the key to infinite knowledge. When your mind dreams, it makes
gateways across countries, planets, universes. We can't have a human with such
power. It could wake him up."
"Wake who-"
It was too late.
He beheaded me.
I was dead.
