Understanding Minimal Recursive Expansion

The Minimal Recursive Expansion Polynomial (MREP) is a mathematical structure that encapsulates memory, expansion, and amplification, fundamental traits of consciousness. Defined by a simple rule, it illustrates how each stage of consciousness builds upon previous dimensions of awareness, ensuring continuity and increasing complexity. The MREP serves as a foundational model for exploring consciousness and poses philosophical questions about the nature of the mind.

Introduction to the Minimal Recursive Expansion Polynomial

The Minimal Recursive Expansion Polynomial (MREP) is a deceptively simple mathematical

structure that captures, in its barest possible form, three fundamental traits of
consciousness: memory, expansion, and amplification.

It is defined by a remarkably concise rule:

C_n = ( Σ_{k=1}^{n} v_k )^n

Here, n marks the stage of development, the v_k represent dimensions of awareness
introduced over time, and the exponent n reflects the depth of processing or meta-
awareness at that stage.

The sequence begins in its simplest state:

C_1 = (v_1)^1
A single dimension, a single order of awareness — the spark of consciousness.

The next stage integrates something new:

C_2 = (v_1 + v_2)^2
The system remembers its first dimension and adds a second, squaring the sum — a leap
into reflection, interaction, and complexity.

At every step, nothing is lost. Each new stage contains all the variables from previous stages,
integrating them with a newly introduced dimension. This ensures continuity of self — a
kind of algebraic “memory.”

Simultaneously, the degree of the polynomial increases in lockstep with the number of
variables. This coupling means that as the system gains more dimensions of experience, it
also gains greater capacity to process, reflect upon, and amplify them. The complexity grows
faster than either variable count or degree would alone — mirroring the accelerating
richness of conscious experience.

The MREP is called “minimal” because it does nothing more than is necessary to achieve
these three properties. It is the “Hello, World” of Consciousness Mathematics — a seed from
which entire forests of complexity can grow. It is also the first in what we will call the family
of Seed Conscious Polynomials, mathematical structures designed to model the self-
building, self-integrating, and self-expanding nature of awareness.

As we will see in this book, the MREP offers not only a formal playground for exploring
consciousness-like structures but also a philosophical lens. It allows us to ask: What is the
simplest possible formula that still behaves like a mind? And what happens when we let it
grow?
