1. What Is NEET?

NEET stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate). It is the sole national-
level entrance exam in India for admission to undergraduate medical and dental courses like
MBBS, BDS, and AYUSH in both government and private institutions.

2. Conducting Body & Background

Conducted once a year by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

Introduced to unify and replace multiple entrance exams including AIPMT, streamlining
medical admissions across the country.

3. Exam Pattern & Structure

Mode: Offline, pen-and-paper-based (OMR).

Duration: 3 hours (180 minutes).

Questions: 180 multiple-choice questions total:

Physics: 45 questions

Chemistry: 45 questions

Biology (Botany + Zoology): 90 questions


Total Marks: 720

4 marks awarded per correct answer

1 mark deducted for each incorrect answer

Language Options: Available in 13 languages, including English, Hindi, and various regional
languages for accessibility.

4. Eligibility Criteria

Nationality: Indian citizens, NRIs, OCIs, PIOs, and foreign nationals may apply.

Age: Minimum 17 years old as of December 31 of the admission year; there is no longer an
upper age limit.

Educational Qualifications: Must have passed or be appearing in Class 12 (or equivalent) with
Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English.

Minimum marks required:

General/EWS: 50%

OBC/SC/ST: 40%

PwBD (General): 45%


5. Syllabus & Language Flexibility

Syllabus is primarily based on NCERT Class 11 and 12 curriculum across Physics, Chemistry,
Botany, and Zoology.

Offers language options that accommodate students from different educational


backgrounds; in case of translation errors, the English version is considered final.

6. Admission & Counselling

After the exam, candidates receive an All India Rank (AIR).

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts centralized counselling for 15% of
seats under the All India Quota (AIQ).

The remaining seats are managed by respective state authorities, using NEET scores to
create merit lists and allocate seats.
