Understanding Stock Types in SAP EWM

JULY 29, 2015/ BY TKREDDY

SAP EWM manages stock in stock types. System shows current stock situation on storage bin
level. In every warehouse the physical stock located either in the warehouse bins or
dock/staging areas. So in this way SAP EWM stocks had either “in Putaway” or “in Warehouse”
with attributes like unrestricted, quality and blocked stocks. A means of subdividing storage

location stock or special stock. The SAP EWM stock type gives an indication of a material’s
usability.

The ERP storage locations are derived for di erent purposes of stocks availability like AFS
(available for sale-goods available), ROD (received on Dock-goods in putaway). Based on our
business requirements we can also con gure storage location for cross-dock stocks and
Returns.
Let’s look at stock type from bottom of the warehouse system into Storage location of ERP
storage location as below
Product quantity in a bin with stock type,
Bin contains Storage type,
Storage type contains availability group plus non location stock type,
Availability group is linked to a storage location in ERP for every warehouse number

Mandatory

In the storage type in

which you post goods
receipts for deliveries,
do not set the
availability group to
Mandatory. This
enables you to post
goods receipts if the
stock has a stock type
that does not belong
to the storage type.
For example, you
have assigned the goods receipt zone (GR zone) to the availability group 001. The delivery item
has stock type F2, which belongs to availability group 002. You can only post the goods receipt
to the GR zone if the availability group is not mandatory. The system only performs an
automatic posting change (for example, from F1 to F2) if:

The source and destination storage types have di erent availability groups.

The availability group is mandatory in the destination storage type.

The stock type in the source storage type does not belong to the availability group for the
destination storage type.

In general, Stock type Role is empty for the storage types. I only see some one con gure stock
type role example as scrapping stock would ensure that Extended Warehouse Management
(EWM) automatically posts the goods to scrap stock when they are moved to the scrapping
area.

See below link here how we can use stock type role can be used

when i nd any good link from SAP help portal.

Common questions

SAP EWM supports the Goods Receipt (GR) process through carefully configured availability groups. When configuring availability groups, critical steps include associating goods receipt zones with appropriate stock types without mandating availability groups. This flexibility allows for managing various stock types, facilitating smooth goods receipts by accommodating stocks into their designated zones even if they initially belong to different availability groups. Additionally, automatic posting changes are enabled within configured parameters to enhance operational continuity .

The configuration of stock types in SAP EWM involves several steps: defining stock types in the LIME application's IMG settings, assigning stock types to warehouses in the IMG Masterdata, and linking them to availability groups for putaway processes. Specifically, availability groups must be matched to storage types without setting them as mandatory in GR zones. This allows flexible handling and transfer processes between different storage types while adhering to predefined stock type configurations .

Location-independent stock types define the quality (such as unrestricted, in quality inspection, or blocked) of stock without depending on the storage type's availability group. In SAP EWM, these stock types facilitate the coordination of stock transfers between storage types by ensuring compatibility and correct stock positioning, even when moving across ERP and EWM systems. This independence enhances flexibility in handling stock across varied operational scenarios and aligns with standard stock types recognized by SAP ERP like FF, QQ, and BB .

SAP EWM manages stock in various stock types which indicate a material’s usability, such as unrestricted-use stock, quality inspection stock, and blocked stock. Handling stock types is essential for distinguishing the usability and immediate disposition of goods, influencing decisions on quality inspection and putaway processes. This is configured in SAP EWM through stock types and availability groups, mapping each to specific roles in the warehouse to delineate stocks that are readily available, under inspection, or considered blocked .

In SAP EWM, returns and scrapping stocks have specific configurations within stock type settings to ensure distinct handling processes. Returns might involve specific non-location dependent stock types and storage locations tailored to accommodate non-valuated stocks, as seen in "RR" stock types. For scrapping, specialized stock type roles can ensure automatic posting to designated scrapping areas. These configurations allow separate tracking and management paths within warehouse operations, ensuring that stocks are processed according to operational standards and compliance requirements .

The 'Stock Type Role' in SAP EWM, although often left empty, can be configured to automate specific stock processes like scrapping. For example, when a stock type role is set for scrapping, SAP EWM can automatically direct goods to the scrapping area within a warehouse when necessary. This type of configuration allows for automated stock handling and aligns with customized warehouse processes to improve efficiency and reduce manual interventions .

The IMG Application is integral to configuring stock types in SAP EWM, providing a structured framework for defining and managing stock configurations. By configuring stock types and their relationships through the IMG settings, businesses can ensure all stock movements are accurately tracked and aligned with organizational objectives, enhancing overall system functionality. The impact is extensive as it facilitates streamlined operations, better inventory management, compliance with regulations, and optimized business processes, all of which are crucial for efficient warehouse management .

Storage location configuration in SAP EWM affects stock management by determining where stocks are categorized as available, blocked, or under quality inspection. Configuring storage locations involves linking these locations with availability groups and stock types, which dictate how stocks are processed and managed. The flexibility in configuration allows the customization of stock flow aligned with business requirements, such as accommodating cross-dock stocks or specific returns handling processes .

Customization in managing stock types within SAP EWM plays a vital role in enhancing warehouse efficiency by allowing organizations to tailor stock management to specific operational needs. Customizing stock types and their configurations enables warehouses to improve workflows, optimize space utilization, and streamline stock management processes according to business-specific requirements. This approach translates into better inventory accuracy, reduced lead times, and increased responsiveness to market demands, driving overall efficiency improvements in warehouse operations .

SAP EWM stock types must align with ERP stock types to ensure consistent stock management across systems. Dependencies arise where location-independent stock types in EWM are mapped to unique ERP stock types like FF (unrestricted-use), QQ (quality inspection), and BB (blocked). This mapping is crucial for synchronized data flow and operational coherence, ensuring that stock transactions reflect accurately between SAP EWM and ERP systems. These dependencies help streamlining operations such as inventory updates, audit trails, and cross-system reporting .
