RDDK-2 Valve Technical Manual

The RDDK-2 valve is a 1.5” O.D. wire line retrievable valve used in artificial lift systems for fluid transfer between injection and production strings. It features two integral reverse flow checks and can function as a dump kill valve or an orifice valve, depending on operational needs. The manual provides detailed assembly and disassembly procedures, required tools, and a bill of materials for maintenance and operation.

MANUAL
DOUBLE REVERSE CHECK DUMP
KILL VALVE RDDK-2
ASSY #0218-0NN
DESCRIPTION
Weatherford ALS’s RDDK-2 valve is a 1.5” O.D. (38.1mm) wire
line retrievable orifice valve with a couple of differing functions.
The valve can be used as a dump kill valve in situations where it
is desirable to transfer fluid from the injection string to the
production string to stop production. It can be used as dummy
valve where the injection string needs to be kept isolated from
the production string until a specific need arises and then
assume the function of an orifice valve.

FEATURES / BENEFITS
• Standard materials for sweet service are 316ss and17-4ss. For
sour service 400 and 500 monel materials are used. Other
materials are available on request.

• There are two integral reverse flow checks.

• The valve can be transferred from its dummy state to an orifice

valve state at a predetermined differential pressure between the
injection string and the production string.

• Trim is Custom 455 aged hardened to 47 H Rc. Gullite is

available.

APPLICATION AND OPERATIONS

In operation the injection string is isolated from the production string
by the two sets of packing located on the valve. Injection pressure
is transmitted to the fracture rod through the mandrel ports and
then thru the orifice ports located between the sets of packing.
The fracture rod is machined to a specific diameter at the fracture
point. At a predetermined differential pressure between the
injection string and the production string the rod will break and
communicate the injection string to the production string. If a dump
kill operation is desired large orifices can supply a high volume of

fluid to the production string, over coming the flowing bottom hole
pressure and bringing the production to a halt. If the operation is
gas lift then the orifices can be sized to meter a desired flow rate
from the injection string to the production string. This rate can be
determined from the gas lift design data given. The RDDK-2 can
be isolated from the operation until required.
Two reverse flow check valves keep fluids from communicating to
the injection string should the production string pressure overcome
the injection string pressure.

TOOLS, SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT REQUIRED NUMBER

1-1/2” Parmalee Pipe Wrench (friction) 2

Mount one to a base
1/2” (14.288 mm) Open End Wrench 2

which are not Loctited to prevent galling).
Lubriderm grease.

DISSASSEMBLY PROCEDURES
1. Place (item16) into the mounted Parmalee wrench with (item
15) facing to the right. Using the 2nd wrench Loosen and
remove (item 15)
2. Place (item18) into the mounted Parmalee wrench with (item
16) facing to the right. Using the 2nd wrench Loosen and
remove (item 16)
3. Place (item 6) into the mounted Parmalee wrench with (item 18)
facing to the right. Using the 2nd wrench Loosen and remove
(item 18). If the RDDK-2 has been in service (item 17) and a
fractured part of (item 19) may be found loose in the cavity.

4. Place (item 4) into the mounted Parmalee wrench with (item 6)

facing to the right. Using the 2nd wrench Loosen and remove
(item 6). If the RDDK-2 has been in service a fractured part of
(item 19) and two (item 5) will be loose in the cavity
5. Place (item 1) into the mounted Parmalee wrench with (item 4)
facing to the right. Using the 2nd wrench Loosen and remove
(item 4). .
6. Remove (item 2) and (item 3) from (item 4). Discard (item 2)
7. Remove (item 10), (item 11), and (item 12) from (item 16).
Discard (item 10)
8. Remove (item 13) and (item 14) from (item 16). Discard (item
14).
9. Using a broad blade screw driver remove all four (item 8 from
(item 6) It may be necessary to apply heat to (item 6) to soften
the Locktite 271 applied at assembly.
10. If the valve had not previously been in service the fracture rod
and component parts will still be fixed in place. Apply some
heat to (item 5) and, using two 1/2 open end wrenches, break
them apart and remove the outer (item 5). Place (item 17) in
the bench vise and remove second (item 5) from (item 19).
Leaving (item 17) in the bench vise and using the 8” pipe
wrench break (item 19) from (item 17) and remove.
11. Using an o-ring pick remove and discard all o-ring seals.
12. Inspect all parts for wear and damage. Discard those parts that
are damaged.

ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE
1. Using new seals and Lubriderm grease install new (item 7)
(3ea) and (item 9) onto their respective parts.
2. Install 4ea (item 2) with the point of the ring leading onto (item
4). Install (item 3) onto (item 4). Install 4ea (item 2) with the
point of the ring trailing onto (item 4).
3. Install 4ea (item 13) with the point of the ring leading onto (item
16). Install (item 14) onto (item 16). Install 4ea (item 13) with
the point of the ring trailing onto (item 16)
4. Place (item 17) into the bench vise. Place two drops of Locktite
271 onto the threads of (item 19) and using a 3/16 open end
wrench make (item 19) up with (item 17) tight.

5. Lubricate the seal on (item 17). Insert (item 19) through the
conic end of (item 6) so that the pin threads of (item19) are
protruding through the other end. Apply three drops of Locktite
271 to the pin threads of (item19). Thread (item 5) onto (item
19) and gradually make it up to solid. Do not apply torque
beyond solid so the fracture point will not be pre-stressed.
Leaving (item 17) free and using two 1/2 open end wrenches
tighten the outer (item 5) against the inner (item 5).
6. Having determined the type of service and the orifices
diameters required to satisfy the service apply two drops of
Locktite 271 to each orifice thread. Using a broad blade
screwdriver make each (item 8) up tight into (item 6).
7. Apply joint compound to the pin threads of (item 6). Thread
(item 4) and (item 18) to (item 6) hand tight. Place (item 4) into
the mounted wrench so that (item 18) is facing to the left. Using
the 2nd wrench tighten (item 18), (item 6), and (item 4) together
tight.
8. Insert (item 12) into (item 16) so that the ball is facing out of
(item 16). Insert (item 11) with the internal bevel proceeding
into (item 16). Insert (item 10) with the internal bevel trailing
into (item 16).
9. Apply joint compound to the pin threads of (item 18). Hand
thread (item 18) to (item 16) making sure none of the inserted
parts becomes miss-aligned. Place (item 18) in the mounted
wrench so that (item 16) would be to the left. Using the 2nd
wrench on (item 16) make it up tight.
10. Apply joint compound to the pin threads of (item 16). Place
(item 16) into the mounted wrench so that (item 15) would be to
the left. Using the 2nd wrench make (item 15) up to (item 16)
and tighten.
11. Apply joint compound to the pin threads of (item 1). Place (item
1) into the mounted wrench so that (item 4) would be to the left.
Using the 2nd wrench make (item 4) up to (item 1) and tighten.
