Lecture Notes:

Geometrical Problem Solving

1. Properties of Angles:

 Adjacent angles share a common vertex and side but do not overlap.

 Vertically opposite angles formed by intersecting lines are equal.

 Complementary angles sum to 90°.

 Supplementary angles sum to 180°.

2. Parallel and Intersecting Lines:

 Alternate interior angles formed by a transversal crossing parallel lines are equal.

 Corresponding angles formed by a transversal crossing parallel lines are equal.

 Co-interior angles (consecutive interior angles) formed by parallel lines are

supplementary.

3. Properties of Triangles:

 Sum of interior angles is 180°.

 An exterior angle of a triangle equals the sum of the two opposite interior angles.

 Equilateral triangle: All angles are 60° and all sides are equal.

 Isosceles triangle: Two sides equal and angles opposite these sides equal.

4. Special Quadrilaterals:

 Square: All sides equal, all angles 90°.

 Rectangle: Opposite sides equal, all angles 90°.

 Rhombus: All sides equal, opposite angles equal.

 Parallelogram: Opposite sides and angles equal, diagonals bisect each other.

 Trapezium: One pair of parallel sides.

Worksheet:

Solve the following problems, explaining your reasoning with diagrams and text:
1. Angles Problem: If two angles are supplementary and one angle is twice the other, find both
angles.

Answer: Let smaller angle = x, larger angle = 2x.

x + 2x = 180°
3x = 180°
x = 60°, and 2x = 120°.

2. Parallel Lines Problem: Two parallel lines are intersected by a transversal. If one alternate
interior angle measures 65°, find the measure of all remaining angles created.

Answer: Alternate interior angles = 65°. Corresponding angles = 65°, co-interior angles = 115°
(180°-65°), vertically opposite angles = 65°.

3. Triangle Problem: In an isosceles triangle, the vertex angle is 40°. Find the measures of the
base angles.

Answer: Let each base angle = x.

40° + x + x = 180°
2x = 140°, x = 70°.

4. Exterior Angle Problem: In triangle ABC, exterior angle at vertex C measures 120°. If angle A
measures 50°, find the measure of angle B.

Answer: Exterior angle = angle A + angle B

120° = 50° + angle B
angle B = 70°.

5. Quadrilateral Problem: A parallelogram has angles in the ratio 3:5. Find the measures of all
angles.

Answer: Let angles be 3x and 5x.

3x + 5x = 180°
8x = 180°, x = 22.5°
Angles: 67.5°, 112.5°, 67.5°, 112.5°.

6. Special Quadrilateral: In a rhombus, one angle is 70°. Find the measures of all other angles in
the rhombus.

Answer: Opposite angles equal = 70°. Adjacent angles supplementary, thus = 110°. Angles: 70°,
110°, 70°, 110°.
