Objective:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand and use question tags in everyday
conversation.

1. 💡 What is a Question Tag?


A question tag is a short question added to the end of a statement. We use it to:

 Check information
 Ask for confirmation
 Keep a conversation going

🔹 Examples:

 You're coming to the party, aren’t you?


 She doesn’t eat meat, does she?
 It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it?

2. Structure of Question Tags


Rule:

A question tag uses an auxiliary verb (helping verb) and a pronoun.

Statement Type Tag Type Example


Positive Negative tag He is tired, isn’t he?
Negative Positive tag They aren’t here, are they?

Common Auxiliary Verbs in Tags:

Tense/Verb Tag Example


Present simple (be) She is a teacher, isn’t she?
Present simple (other verbs) You like tea, don’t you?
Past simple (be) It was cold, wasn’t it?
Past simple (do) They went out, didn’t they?
Tense/Verb Tag Example
Modal verbs You can swim, can’t you?

3. ✨ Special Cases:
 I am → I’m late, aren’t I?
 Let’s → Let’s go, shall we?
 Imperatives → Open the window, will you?

4. 🎙️Pronunciation Tip
In spoken English, the intonation matters:

 Rising intonation → when you’re really asking or unsure


 Falling intonation → when you’re just confirming something
