ABSTRACT

SOLAR POWERED SMART IRRIGATION SYSTEM

Water and electricity are two of the most vital resources in the field of agriculture, particularly in
countries where farming forms the backbone of the economy. With growing concerns over the
wastage of water and the overuse of electricity in conventional irrigation methods, there is a
pressing need for more sustainable solutions. This project, titled "Solar Powered Smart
Irrigation System," presents an innovative approach to irrigation that aims to address these
challenges through automation and renewable energy integration. Falling under the domain of
mechanical engineering, the project focuses on optimizing water usage in farming by
automatically controlling irrigation based on environmental conditions, while significantly
reducing dependency on conventional electricity by using solar power.

The central problem addressed by this system is the inefficient use of water and electricity in
traditional irrigation, particularly during seasonal changes when crop water requirements vary.
Farmers often either under-irrigate or over-irrigate due to a lack of real-time data and manual
oversight. The objective of this project is to design and implement an irrigation system that can
autonomously deliver the required amount of water to crops using sensors that detect soil
moisture levels. These sensors, powered by solar energy, provide real-time input to a control
unit that activates water pumps only when needed, ensuring efficient irrigation.

The methodology involves the integration of soil moisture sensors, a solar power system, and
automated control coding. Sensors are strategically placed in the soil to monitor moisture
content, and based on predefined threshold values coded into the system, water is supplied to
the field automatically. The entire setup is powered by solar panels, which not only make the
system energy-efficient but also sustainable and eco-friendly.

The results of the project demonstrated a significant optimization in water usage, reducing both
wastage and manual labor. Additionally, the dependency on electrical power was minimized,
promoting the use of renewable solar energy. This system is especially beneficial in remote or
rural areas where electricity supply is limited or inconsistent.
