Description
This screen is used for input of temperature profiles or information that is needed for calculation of temperature profile. User can manually input
temperature profiles in the annulus or drill string (for example based on calculated results from another temperature profile calculation package), or
they can also be calculated based on TPro inputs. Check one of the radio buttons at the bottom (Manual Input or TPro Input) to indicate whether
the manually input temperature profile or the calculated temperature profile will be used in other programs such as VRDH or hole cleaning
calculation.
The two different ways to input temperature profile are described as follows
Manual Input
Temperature of the drill fluid in the drill string and annulus is input as a function of measured depth. The temperatures should be defined for a depth
>= well TD.
Depth - measured depth
Temperature - corresponding temperature at the depth
- sort the data entries according to depth
- add a new row at the end of the grid
- delete the selected row
- move the selected row up
- move the selected row down
TPro Input
If this option is selected, the temperature profile in the annulus and drill string will be calculated by the sophisticated transient temperature profile
calculations in TPro.
Calculation Options
Three calculation options are available in TPro. These options, and the inputs needed for each option are described below:
Circulation Profile: A fully transient temperature simulation is performed based on input of suction temperature, total circulation time, and
circulation time to display in the results. For example, the simulation may be performed for a total of 24 hours, but the results may be displayed say
at the end of 6 hours. The temperature profiles at the end of 6 hours will also be used in other calculations, example in VRDH. The starting point of
the simulation is when all fluids are in equilibrium with the formation temperatures, and then it is assumed the fluid is circulated at flow rate defined
in Flow Rate Input screen for a time equal to total circulation time. The circulation time option allows user to perform subsequent analysis at any
intermediate point.
Field Profile: A semi-steady state analysis of downhole temperature is performed, and the resulting temperature profile in the drill-string and
annulus is adjusted to match the suction, flow-line and bottom hole circulating temperatures. It is important to note that the bottom hole
circulating, and not the bottom hole static temperature input is required. Also, the total circulation time at the point of interest is also required.
Static Profile: A semi-steady state static temperature simulation, based on last available transient circulation profile data is calculated. The total
static time is required for the simulation.
Temperature Data
Input the ambient temperature, and suction temperature. For field profile calculation, also input bottom hole circulating temperature and flow
line temperature.
Formation Temperature Profile
TVD - true vertical depth
Temp - formation temperature at the TVD
- add a new row at the end of the grid
- delete the selected row
- sort the data entries according to TVD
- move the selected row up
- move the selected row down
Circulation Data
PV - plastic viscosity of the circulating fluids
YP - yield point of the circulating fluids
Ty/YP Ratio (0-1) - yield stress to yield point ratio. Input value must be between 0 and 1. Typical entry for most fluids is 0.2 - 0.7.
Note: If you are not sure what Ty to use, you can use low shear yield point value (2*3-rpm reading - 6-rpm reading).
Control Buttons
- Update: When this button is clicked, all changes in the input form will be updated in global memory, so that all subsequent
calculations will use the new data. However, the changes made have NOT been saved permanently to the database at this point.
- Back: Click on this "Back" button, the previous temperature profile input form will be displayed.
- Run: Click this button to display results of temperature profile calculations as shown above (also see Temperature Profile Results
screen). The data grid represents downhole temperature profile in the annulus, drill-string, and formation. The well geometry graph
shows downhole temperature profile in terms of a color scale, where RED represents high temperature (130 °F in example), and blue
represents low temperature (78 °F in example).
- Graph: Click this button to generate graphical representation of downhole temperature profile (as shown below).
