Description
This module allows user to input necessary information for calculations of the hole cleaning.
Sensitivity Control
The program may be used to calculate the sensitivity of various operating parameters that affect hole cleaning. For example, higher flow rates and
rotary speed improve hole cleaning, while higher ROP may adversely affect hole cleaning. The various options for sensitivity control are None, Flow
(Rate), Rotary (Speed) and ROP. If "None" is selected, then the flow rate, rotary speed and ROP are used from the "Parameters" group. If any of the
other options are selected, then at most three different values of that parameter may be used, while keeping the other two options at a constant value
(these constant values are then read from the "Parameters" group). There is also an option to select results from which of the three possible values
would be displayed on the graphical output.
Drill Cuttings
This group is used to input properties of drill cuttings. The various inputs are described below.
Fluid Type - type of the drilling fluid (used to determine effect of fluid type on reactive cuttings such as shale)
Cuttings Type - select Shale, Sandstone or Limestone
Cuttings s.g. - specific gravity of the cuttings (default value is 2.6 if no data is input)
Cuttings Size - select Custom, Extra Large, Large, Medium Large, Medium, Medium Small or Small
Cuttings Thickness - If "Custom" is selected in the above Cuttings Size combo box, the thickness of the disc-shape cuttings should be input at this
entry.
Cuttings Diameter - If "Custom" is selected in the above Cuttings Size combo box, the diameter of the disc-shape cuttings should be input at this
entry.
Used Cuttings Thick - Read-only field to display the thickness of the disc-shape cuttings corresponding to the selected Cuttings Size, and is used
to display value used for calculations.
Used Cuttings Diam - Read-only field to display the diameter of the disc-shape cuttings corresponding to the selected Cuttings Size, and is used to
display value used for calculations.
Parameters
Parametric analysis of hole-cleaning can be performed for one of three parameters (flow rate, ROP or rotary speed), while the other two parameters
are held constant. This group is used to input values that are held constant for the analysis. The various inputs are described below.
Flow Rate - The flow rate at which the calculations will be performed. This value is used if ROP or Rotary Speed is used for parametric analysis.
Rotary - This indicates the rotary speed of the drill string. This value is used if Flow Rate or ROP is used for parametric analysis.
ROP - The current rate of penetration. This value is used if Flow Rate or Rotary Speed is used for parametric analysis.
Parameters
This group is used to input basic information on pressure loss and surface connections. The various inputs are described below.
Surf Code - is the surface equipment code. There are five codes based on different surface connection configuration. If the code is zero (first
option), then surface pressure loss is input under "Surface Conn" field. If the code is different from zero, it will be computed for the given selected
equipment configuration.
Surface Conn - is the input pressure loss for surface equipment if "Surface Code" is set to zero.
Surf Ann Pressure - is the additional pressure in the annulus imposed by a rotating head.
Ref. Flow - is the flow rate at which the pressure loss through the MWD and Mud Motor is measured.
Ref. MW - is the mud weight of the fluid for which the pressure loss through the MWD and Mud Motor was measured. If not input, a default mud
weight of 8.345 lb/gal (water) is be used.
dpMWD - is estimated pressure loss through the MWD.
dpMotor - is estimated pressure loss through the motor.
On/off Bottom - is the additional pressure observed when the drill string is on bottom.
By Pass - is estimated flow rate that by-passes the bit (0-100%).
External Data
VH Downhole Data - if the box is checked, then the program calculates downhole ESD and rheology profiles based on Drilling Fluid, Temperature
Profile, and Virtual Rheology input data. Hole-cleaning calculations are performed based on variable downhole density and rheology profiles. If VH
Downhole data is not used (un-checked), then the program uses the manually input ESD and rheology profiles to calculate the hole cleaning profile.
The Hole Cleaning Local Data page is then used to input the ESD and rheology profiles. This feature is useful to compare CleanPro results with
other software packages that do not account for the effect of temperature and pressure on density and rheology.

- Update: When this button is clicked, all changes in the input form will be updated in global memory, so that all subsequent
calculations will use the new data. However, the changes made have NOT been saved permanently to the database at this point.
