A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITY
A.1 PRE-TEST: Written Work
Communicating effectively entails an end goal for the speaker. Is the communicative action initiated to
inform? To motivate? Or to express feelings or opinions? No matter what end goal the sender has, it is
important to know how to effectively reach that goal through strategic non-verbal and verbal cues.
What are some of the things you want to achieve when you communicate something?

B. PRESENTATION
B.1 ENGAGE (Motivation)
We often speak in school, particularly when doing reports, recitations, debates, dialogues, monologues,
dramatizations, declamations, orations and other forms of academic oral presentations. In fact, formal speaking
has been a subject all the way back to ancient times. Speaking well has always been appreciated as a trait of the
well-educated. Indeed, the best place to gain confidence in speaking is the classroom, where we have the
friendly company of our teachers and classmates. In the classroom, we have that distinct advantage of being
coached, and of having our classmates to practice our speaking skills.
Q1: Do you find yourself more confident in reciting in class now after that 10 years of class participation?
Q2: Did your classroom experience help you gain confidence and better speaking and reporting skills?
How?
B.2 EXPLAIN
LC1: Classify and discuss each function of communication.
Function refers to the particular purpose for which a thing is used, something exists, or a person is fitted
to meet his or somebody else's needs or desires.
Whenever we communicate, we always have a definite purpose, which is usually intentional, perceptible
or recognizable, and functional or designed to achieve something positive. In some instances, however, our
good intention produces a concomitant or accompanying unintentional, dysfunctional result. To avoid having
this unintended negative effect, we need to use clear, correct language and be sensitive to cultural differences.
Basic Functions of Communication
A. To provide Information - This is the most basic function of communication.
1. Communication provides data and information for effective completion of tasks, solution of
problems, and elimination of uncertainty. The three flows of information are:
a) Downward flow - from the superiors or elders to the updates; subordinates in the form of
directives or
b) Upward flow - from the subordinates or family members to superiors or elders in the
form of feedback and reports or suggestions; and
c) Horizontal flow (peer to peer) - from worker to worker, husband to wife and vice versa,
sibling to sibling, or manager to manager in the form of data and reports
(Lombardo,2015)
2. Through communication, we get information on what is going on around us. Giving and
receiving information, directly or indirectly, encompasses all other functions of
communication.
3. The amount of information we share with another person or others varies depending the
degree of our closeness to each other or to one another. For instance, we do not share a lot of
information with a stranger, but we tend to share a lot of information with a stranger, but we
tend to share more when we are with our immediate family or our close friends.
B. To motivate - Motivation is the energy that influences a person's behaviour in different ways in his pursuit
of his goal or objective.

1. Communication fosters motivation. If we know what, why, and how things should be done, we gain
self-confidence and encouragement to accomplish our tasks.
2. Communication helps us set specific goals and gives us update or feedback on our progress, whether
positive or negative, toward the accomplishment of these goals. Moreover, it helps us reinforce
desired behaviour, rectify any undesirable action, and motivate others as well.
Examples:
The priest or the leader of a religious organization preachers to his parish to motivate them to
live a Christian way of life.
The teacher updates his students on their school performance to encourage them to do better.
C. To control or regulate - To control or regulate is to exercise restraint or direction formally or informally.
The expression of needs and wants is a way to regulate the behaviour of another person to obtain something or
get something done (Murphy, 2014). This happens particularly among family members or acquaintances.
The control or regulation function is more observable in formal organizations than in (Kamat, 2011).
Rules, regulations, and policies in establishments are formal home rules and formal ones agreements while
unspoken or unwritten rules are informal. Another kind of control, which includes hazing, harassment,
wife/husband beating, bullying, and others, though condemned by society, happen in our midst; hence, they are
our social concerns.
Examples:
School rules and policies on attendance, grading, dress codes are prescribed.
Employees are urged to follow authority hierarchies and some formal guidelines
D. To facilitate emotional expression - Communication makes possible the release or unloading of emotions,
resulting in catharsis. Communicating your emotions verbally or nonverbally (e.g., being angry, sad, or afraid)
will alleviate your anxiety and help you get out of your emotional blocking. In times like this, you need
someone "to talk to" or "a shoulder to cry on". Emotional appeal on the other hand, is used in persuading people
to change their mind or behaviour.
