BASIC OPERATIONS OF A COMPUTER

The basic operations of a computer include the following; Input, Process, Store and Output.

1. Input: To input simply means to enter or feed data (text, numbers, pictures, sound) into the
computer system and this data is fed into the computer system via (through) input devices or
peripherals. There are a number of input devices, which include keyboards, touch sensitive
screen, and digital cameras. Now before we move on to look at another basic operation of a
computer it is just important to briefly define and distinguish data and information.

Data: refers to raw facts, figures, text, etc, that is not processed and has no meaning. Data can
also mean unprocessed facts, figures, text, etc. that carry no meaning. Information on the other
hand is processed data. In other words data only becomes information when it has been
converted or processed into meaningful information.

2. Processing: Is the conversion of raw data into useful information. Processing includes the
following: calculating, drawing, searching, etc. the processing component in a computer is called
a CPU- Central Processing Unit or a Microprocessor. (Found on the mother board which we will
look at later in our discussion).

3. Storage: Refers to the safe keeping of the data that has been entered into the computer so that
it can be used when required. Data can be stored both temporally (while a program is running or
while the computer is on) and long term so that it can be preserved while software and hardware
is not in use or in simple terms when the computer is off.

4. Output: Refers to the visible and audible data that has been processed. Outputs are made
available by output peripherals or devices.
