About Civiltech Shoring

• Set of “Modules”, which are like pre-made Excel workbooks

• The Shoring Module is the most important.
• YOU control the loads, load factors and safety factors.
• Outputs .txt and pdf files. Modules can also be saved but need to be
opened by the respective modules (i.e. use Earthpres to open Earthpres)
• Generally does not run without a licence key
• Technically it will “run,” but it will display garbage outputs.

Automatic Soil and Water Pressures
• Different pressure shapes above the bottom of excavation: Triangular,
Rectangular, Trapezoid, Trapezoidal. Below the wall base, pressures
are always automatically Triangular.
• Earthquake loads can also be applied. In a single granular layer
condition with unbroken slopes, this pressure will mirror an equation
called Mononobe-Okabe. Although the program “recommends” only
applying earthquake to active side, this is subject to Code.

Automatic Surcharge Pressures
• Civiltech’s “Boussinesq” equation used for strip loading is taken from Teng’s
1962 book, Foundation Design. It is adopted by the State of California
Department of Transportation Trenching and Shoring Manual. It differs from
the one used by DM7.1.
• The equation is applicable to rigid walls. CT Shoring provides an option for
flexible systems (i.e. completely elastic) by dividing Teng’s pressure by 2.
Finally, there is a “semi-flexible” option, which is the average of the results of
the rigid and flexible options.
• Civiltech provides a disclaimer regarding the use of the “flexible” option.
• For infinite loads, Civiltech recommends using the Active Wedge option
(provided). New software feature allows input of soil average friction angle.
• Railroad Loads option is a special case of strip load. New software feature
allows selection of Cooper E60 or E80. Note: Rigid Option automatically
assumed.
Automatic Surcharge Pressures
Unlike the Earthpres
Module, the

Shoring Options
Five wall types are
available.

• Imported from Earthpres and
Surcharge, or manually input.
• LRFD factors are NOT shown.
However, they are applied
internally. If applied in previous
module, use FS = 1.
• You can override any pressures
with your own.
Shoring Options- Braces and Forces
Note:
For braced walls, CT
Shoring takes the
moments about the
bottom support.
When more than one
brace is used, this can
be unsafe.
Shoring Options- Output Options

Piles listed will always

deflect too much.

the required Sx.

If providing input pile,

make sure it is listed in
the Shoring lists. If
not listed, revise list
and save.
