DEVELOPMENT OF A LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (LMS) FOR
NWAFOR ORIZU, COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, NSUGBE, ANAMBRA STATE
Chapter One
1. Introduction
Nwafor Orizu College of Education was established in 1976 and is situated in the
Nigerian state of Anambra. It was once called the Nsugbe College of Education. It was
named in honour of Abyssinia Akweke Nwafor Orizu, the second president of Nigeria's
Senate (Archive, 2021). Dr. Justina Anyadiegwu is the current provost of the College of
Education, whereas Professor Felix Ndu was the institution's first provost.
The Nwafor Orizu College of Education in Nsugbe (NOCEN) is a reputable Nigerian
institution that attracts students from across the country because of its excellent academic
reputation. It encourages students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a
passion for lifelong learning by offering a wide range of programs to suit various interests.
Beyond academic achievement, the institution promotes students' overall growth, supported
by a vibrant campus, modern facilities, and a diverse array of extracurricular activities.
NOCEN maintains high educational standards and aims to be a leading center for teaching,
research, and community service in Nigeria. It has numerous faculties and departments
offering both undergraduate and postgraduate courses to local and international students.
Courses include disciplines such as Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics,
Mathematics, Business Education, Computer Education, Economics, Foreign Languages,
Arts, and Social Sciences, among others. Currently, these courses rely on traditional lecture
methods, but there is an urgent need to adopt digital literacy aligned with the Sustainable
Development Goals.
The fastest and simplest way to learn in the 21 st Century is the adoption of a learning
management system, (Muhammad, 2021). A Learning Management System (LMS) is a
software application designed for the purpose of teaching, learning, administration,
documentation, reporting, and tracking academic records. It enables educational institutions

to create, manage, and deliver training materials (Bradley, 2021). LMS platforms are widely
used in various sectors, including schools, universities, and businesses, to streamline learning
processes and enhance educational outcomes.
1.2 Problem of the Statement
In today’s digital age, traditional methods of teaching and learning are increasingly
challenged by the need for flexible, accessible, and technology-driven instruction. Many
institutions like Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe, continue to rely on traditional
classroom-based instruction and paper-based administrative systems processes for lecture
delivery, attendance, grading, assignment, and communication between teachers and students,
which limit access to learning materials, reduce instructional efficiency, poor tracking of
student progress, and inadequate engagement, especially in blended or remote learning
contexts.
Despite the growing demand for digital integration in education, the college currently
lacks a centralized system to manage and deliver learning content, monitor academic
performance, and support administrative tasks. This gap not only hinders effective teaching
and learning but also makes it difficult to provide personalized instruction, timely feedback,
and collaborative learning opportunities, which are essential for academic success in the 21st-
century, (Bharat et al., 2023)
Therefore, there is a need to implement a Learning Management System (LMS) that
will serve as a unified platform for instructional delivery, academic record-keeping,
communication, and student engagement. The adoption of an LMS aims to enhance teaching
efficiency, improve learning outcomes, and ensure that the school aligns with modern
educational standards and digital transformation goals, (Jeffrey, 2021).
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
This study aims at development of a Learning Management System for Nwafor Orizu
College of Education, Nsugbe, Anambra State. While the objectives are:
i. To design a Learning Management System (LMS)
ii. To implement the design using an Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) language,
and MySQL Database.

iii. To evaluate the LMS system's effectiveness and user satisfaction using a structured
questionnaire.
1.4 Scope of the Study
The research study will be limited to the development and evaluation of an LMS
system for the Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe, Anambra State.
1.5 Motivation
The main motivation for developing this LMS system was to reduce the workload by
helping lecturers and students of NOCEN to achieve a better educational outcome with easy
learning.
1.6 Definition of Key Terms
1.6.1 Learning: Learning is the process through which a person acquires new knowledge,
skills, behaviors, attitudes, or values, often through study, experience, practice, or teaching. It
results in a relatively permanent change in the way a person thinks, feels, or behaves.
1.6.2. Management: Management is the process of planning, organizing, directing, and
controlling resources (such as people, money, and materials) to achieve specific goals
efficiently and effectively. Planning involves setting objectives and deciding how to achieve
them. Organizing entails arranging resources and tasks to implement plans. Directing consists
of guiding and motivating people to work towards goals, while controlling involves
monitoring performance and making adjustments to stay on track. A simple definition of
management can be said to be the art and science of coordinating people and resources to
achieve desired goals.
1.6.3 System: A system is a set of interrelated components or elements that work together
to form a single system to achieve a specific goal or purpose.
1.7 Significance of the study

The research lies in its potential to enhance the quality, accessibility, and effectiveness
of teaching and learning in the NOCEN through the implementation of a Learning
Management System (LMS). The LMS is relevant in today’s digital era, making education
accessible beyond the physical classroom.
1.8 Research Questions
To achieve the objectives of this study, the following questions have been designed
1. Can the proposed system be recommended for effective and efficient use for lectures
and students in NOCEN
2. How well can the lecturers and the students be satisfied with the usage of the Learn -
ing Management System
3. What level of training and support is required for teachers and students to effectively
use the LMS?
4. What are the potential barriers to the successful adoption and sustainability of the
LMS in the college?
1.9 Expected Contribution to Knowledge
This research work will contribute immensely to knowledge in teaching and learning
virtually in the College. The LMS system will contribute to knowledge in the areas of high-
performance virtual classroom lecture delivery, easy learning, and feedback. The system is
also capable of accommodating large numbers of students at a time. By integrating LMS
tools with existing curricula, the study promotes modern teaching strategies, including
flipped classrooms, blended learning, and online collaboration.
