0 DESIGN OF DIAPHRAGM WALL
8.1 Analysis of Wall
The baffle wall spans between two vertical walls with the bottom is pinned to the beam and top is free
The wall is designed for the water to be retained on one side and the other side is empty.
Referring to pca 'Portland Cement Association' handbook on rectangular concrete tanks, case 2,
sides are fixed with bottom is hinged and top is free
Height of wall, a (water to be retained) = 3.25 m
Length of wall, b (hzl span) = 4.2 m
b/a = 1.29
The table b / a = 1.5 is considered
Moment = coeff x q a2 / 1000
Shear = coeff x q x a
Water pressure at bottom of wall = 10 x 3.25 kN/m2
= 32.5 kN/m2
For the moment about x axis, max. coeff = 27 (for vertical reinforcement)
Mx = 27 x 32.5 x 3.25^2 / 1000
= 9.27 kN.m
For the moment about y axis, max. coeff = 63 (for horizontal reinforcement)
My = 63 x 32.5 x 3.25^2 / 1000
= 21.63 kN.m
Bottom shear, coeff = 0.26
= 0.26 x 32.5 x 3.25
= 27.46 kN
8.2 Analysis of Bottom Beam
Considering half of the water pressure on gate which is below the drop wall is applied on beam to design
Height of gate below drop wall = 5 m
Half of water pressure on gate = (32.5 + 57.5) / 2 x 2.5
= 112.5 kN
Total horizontal load on beam = 112.5 + 27.46
= 139.96 kN/m
Max BM at support = 139.96 x 4.2^2 / 12
= 205.74 kN.m
Max BM at span = 139.96 x 4.2^2 / 24
= 102.87 kN.m
Max. shear force = 293.92 kN
