Department of Electronics & Communication

Engineering(DECE)

Experiment No.2

2.1 Objective: Design of Comparator.

2.2 Equipments Required:
1. Non-Consumable 1. ST2611 techbook with power supply cord
2. Consumable 1. 15 numbers of 22-26 gauge wires
2. IC 7408 2 input AND Gate
3. IC 7404 NOT Gate IC
4. IC 7486 2 input EX-OR Gate

2.3 Basic Principle/Theory involved:Magnitude Comparator is a logical circuit, which compares

two signals A and B and Generates three logical outputs, whether A > B, A = B, or A < B. IC 7485 is a
high speed 4-bit Magnitude comparator, which compares two 4-bit words. The A = B Input must be held
high for proper compare operation.

2.4 Procedure:
Step 1. Check all the components for their working.
Step 2. Insert the appropriate IC into the IC base.
Step 3. Make connections as shown in the circuit diagram.
Step 4. Verify the Truth Table and observe the outputs.

2.5 CIRCUIT DIAGRAM: 1-BIT COMPARATOR

Fig. 2.1 Circuit Diagram

2.6 Boolean Expression:
A>B = AB
A<B = AB
A=B = AB+A B

2.7 TRUTH TABLE: Table 2.1 Truth Table of 1-bit Comparator

2.8 Result: Comparator has been implemented and verifies its truth table.
2.9 Viva Voce questions:
1.
2. 1. What is a comparator?
3. 2. What are the applications of comparator?
4. 3. Derive the Boolean expressions of one-bit comparator and two bit comparators.
5. 4. How do you realize a higher magnitude comparator using lower bit comparator?
6. 5. Design a 2 bit comparator using a single Logic gates?
