Overview of Human Body Systems

The document outlines various biological systems, including the digestive and circulatory systems. It details the components and functions of the digestive system, such as the mouth, stomach, and intestines, which work together to break down food and absorb nutrients. Additionally, it introduces the circulatory system as the blood pumping system, indicating a focus on human anatomy and physiology.

1. DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
 The digestive system is a system in which food is broken down into
smaller pieces so your body can absorb the nutrients and gain energy.
 The main parts of the digestive system are;

1. The Mouth – This is where the process of digestion begins. When

we eat food the teeth break down the food into smaller pieces
by chewing.

2. The Tongue – Since the tongue contains saliva, it helps soften the
food and pushes the bolus – a ball of food – down the throat to
the ‘oesophagus.’

3. The Oesophagus – Known as the food pipe, it transports boluses

down to the stomach.

4. The Stomach – In the stomach, the food mixes with hydrochloric

acid and other digestive juices. This takes about 3-4 hours.
5. Small Intestines – The work of the small intestines is to absorb
the energy and nutrients from the food into our blood stream.

6. Large Intestines – The large intestines absorb the water from the
leftover food and turn it into solid waste.

7. The Rectum – This is where waste is stored before leaving the

body.

8. The Anus – This is the opening where waste leaves the body.

2. CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
 The Circulatory System – The blood pumping system.
