Improving Community Collaborations for Stronger School-Family Partnerships
Schools are essential parts of the community, and community-school collaboration must
be strengthened to support students' success. However, while this partnership is valued, issues
such as poor communication, limited integration of social services, and a poor alignment of
school and community goals often emerge as challenges. I am part of the school and the
community and have witnessed first-hand the positive effects of community engagements in
school affairs, especially on students' academic outcomes. For example, in a neighboring school
where I once engaged, poor engagement between the school and the local enterprises resulted in
these enterprises limiting internship (advanced learning) opportunities to students. On the other
hand, another school that had a better collaboration with the local communities enabled the
school to access mental health services, food assistance programs, and internship opportunities,
significantly improving the community's and the student's well-being.
The above examples affirm that improved community-school collaboration benefits the
community and the school. Schools provide students from the community with tutoring,
mentorship, job training, and access to academic and school resources (Davis, 2000).
Communities gain from the deeper investment and having a sense of shared responsibility for
nurturing students. As a teacher, I would implement two strategies to promote further
collaboration: 1) enhance project-based learning with local partners and 2) host community
resource events. In project-based learning, I would encourage students to partner with local
businesses and non-profit organizations to develop beneficial sustainability projects to benefit
the community. Resource events would be quarterly events where businesses, non-profits, and
service providers share their resources with families and communities. By fostering strong

community-school ties, I believe we will bridge the gap in student support and avail resources
for both the community and the schools.
