Activity 4: Making Tools to Measure the Wind and Rain
Strand: Environmental Science
Theme: Weather Observation Tools
Title: Duration: 45 minutes
Setting: Classroom & Outdoor Area
Learning Objectives
By the end of this activity, students will:
✅ Recognize three simple weather tools: wind vane, rain gauge, anemometer
✅ Build one tool in small groups
✅ Observe and describe how weather can be measured
✅ Collaborate and present their tool to the class
Step-by-Step Procedure
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
Start with discussion:
“Can we see wind?”
“How do we know the direction it’s blowing or how fast it is?”
“How can we collect and measure rain?”
Explain:
"Today, we’ll work in 3 groups to build three different weather tools
Group Setup & Tools (35 minutes total)
Group 1: Wind Vane (11minutes)
Purpose: Shows wind direction
Materials:
Straw
Paper arrow (cut and colored)
Pencil with eraser
Push pin
Small cup with clay or stones
Compass (teacher-led for direction)
Steps:
1. Cut arrowhead and tail from paper and tape to ends of a straw.
2. Push a push pin through the middle of the straw into the pencil eraser.
3. Stand the pencil in a cup filled with stones/clay.
4. Place outside. The arrow turns to show where the wind comes from.
5. Use compass to label directions (N, S, E, W).
Group 2: Rain Gauge (12 minutes)
Purpose: Measures amount of rain
Materials:
Plastic bottle (cut top by teacher)
Stones
Marker
Ruler (optional)
Steps:
1. Teacher cuts top off bottle.
2. Add stones to bottom (for weight).
3. Pour water to cover stones and mark the starting line.
4. Place outside on flat ground to collect rain.
5. Observe and measure water level after rainfall.
Group 3: Anemometer (12 minutes)
Purpose: Measures wind speed
Materials:
4 paper cups
2 straws
1 pencil with eraser
Push pin
Marker
Steps:
1. Attach cups at ends of two straws.
2. Cross straws and pin in the center.
3. Push into pencil eraser.
4. Color one cup to observe spinning.
5. Place outside and watch it spin in the wind.
Group Sharing (5 minutes)
Each group explains:
What tool they built
What it does
How it works
(Optional: each group demonstrates their tool outside!)
