A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY TO ASSESS THE KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE
REGARDING RESPECTFUL MATERNITY CARE AMONG NURSING OFFICERS
IN A QUARTENARY CARE HOSPTIAL IN DELHI

INTRODUCTION
Respectful maternity care refers to humane and dignified treatment of a
childbearing woman throughout the perinatal period. It respects her rights and
choices through supportive communication, actions and attitudes. Women have the
right to receive respectful maternity care in all healthcare systems around the world.
Respectful treatment results in improved feto-maternal outcome along with serving
as a positive emotional life changing experience.
OBJECTIVES
1. To assess the knowledge regarding respectful maternity care among Nursing
Officers.
2. To assess the attitude regarding respectful maternity care among Nursing
Officers.
3. To assess the association between knowledge and socio demographic data.
4. To assess the association between attitude and socio demographic data.
5. To assess the correlation between knowledge and attitude.
METHODOLOGY
Approach: Quantitative research design
Study design: Descriptive research design
Research setting: Quarternary hospital in Delhi
Sampling population: Nursing Officers
Sampling technique: Purposive sampling
Sample size: 100
Tool: Self constructed semi structured questionnaire
DATA COLLECTION
Data were collected through Self constructed semi structured questionnaire
focusing on respectful maternity care in correlation with knowledge, attitude and
socio- demographic data.
DATA ANALYSIS
Statistical analysis was used to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding
RMC and sociodemographic variables. The significance level was set at p<0.05.
Results in there is a weak positive correlation (r=0.260 and p=0.009) between
knowledge and attitude regarding respectful maternity care and is statistically
significant. Chi-square test revealed that demographic variables were found to be
non-significant with knowledge regarding respectful maternity care among nursing
officers.
RESULT
The study revealed that majority of the nursing officers (78%) had average
knowledge, (17%) had poor knowledge and (5%) had good knowledge. The
maximum (93%) had good attitude and (7%) had average attitude with SD=6.29.
There is a weak positive correlation (r=0.260 and p=0.009) between knowledge and
attitude regarding respectful maternity care and is statistically significant. Chi-square
test revealed that demographic variables were found to be non-significant at p<0.05
with knowledge regarding respectful maternity care among nursing officers.

DISCUSSION
In our study, the correlation between knowledge and attitude regarding
respectful maternity care among Nursing Officers showed a weak positive correlation
between knowledge and attitude which is statistically significant.
IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE
Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) is a crucial aspect of Nursing practice,
ensuring that women receive dignified, culturally sensitive, and evidence-based care
during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. We explore the implications of RMC in
Nursing practice, emphasizing its significance in promoting positive maternal and
neonatal outcomes.
RECOMMENDATION
1. Continuing Nursing education, workshops, seminars and symposiums should be
organized to enhance the knowledge regarding respectful maternity care among
the staff nurses.
2. Respectful maternity care should be included as a topic in obstetrical Nursing
curriculum for student nurses.
3. Instructional module can be developed and made handy for the health care
providers regarding respectful maternity care.
4. Feedback system should be developed to drive quality improvement initiatives
within the health care facilities.
CONCLUSION
The study concluded that maximum nursing officers had average knowledge
while maximum had good attitude towards it. Also there is a weak relation between
knowledge and attitude regarding respectful maternity care.
