Grade:XII

Subject: Chemistry Marks: 35

Topic: Solutions Time: 1hour 30 minutes

I. Multiple choice Questions 3x1=3

1. Which of the following is the correct example of solid solution in which the solute in
gas phase?
(a) Copper in gold (b) Camphor in N2 gas (c) H2 in Pd (d) All of these
2. The value of Hendry’s constant,KH is-----
(a) Greater for gases with higher solubility (b) Constant for all gases
(c ) Greater for gases with lower solubility (d) Not related to solubility of gases
3. Which of the following azeotropic solutions has the boiling point less than the
boiling point of the constituent molecules?
(a) CHCl3 & CH3COCH3 (b) CS2 & CH3COCH3 (c) CH3CHO &CS2 (d) All of these
II. Assertion & Reason questions 2x1=2
4. Assertion: Azeotropic mixtures are formed only by non-ideal solutions and they may
have boiling points either greater than both the components or less than both the
components.
Reason: The composition of the vapour phase is same as that of the liquid phase of
an azeotropic mixture.
5. Assertion: When a solution is separated from the pure solvent by a semi- permeable
membrane, the solvent molecules pass through it from pure solvent side to the
solution side.
Reason: Diffusion of solvent occurs from a region of high concentration solution to a
region of low concentration solution.
III. Answer the following questions 5x2=10
6. (i) What happens when we place the blood cell in water? Give reason.
(ii) Define the term Osmosis and Osmotic pressure.
7. (i) Define (i) Abnormal molar mass (ii) Van’t Hoff factor
(ii) Aquatic animals are more comfortable in cold water rather than hot water. Why?
8. (i) If 1L of a solution contains 5ml of a certain disinfectant then express the
concentration in ppm.
(ii) Differentiate ideal and Non-ideal solution
9. (i) State Hendry’s law. Explain the applications of henry’s law.
(ii) What is edema?
10. (i) Define the term Molarity and Mole fraction.
(ii) What are colligative properties?
IV. Answer the following 5x3=15
11. (i) Calculate the mass % of benzene (C6H6) and CCl4 if 22g of benzene is dissolved in
122g of CCl4?
(ii) Calculate the molarity of KI solution if the density of 20% aqueous KI is 1.202g/ml
{Atomic mass of K=39 and I=127}
12. H2 S, a toxic gas with rotten egg like smell, is used for the qualitative analysis. If the
solubility of H2S in water at STP is 0.195 m, calculate Henry’s law constant.
13. Explain the positive and negative deviation of Raoult’s law by taking one example
with diagram.
14. (i) Vapour pressure of pure water at 298 K is 23.8 mm Hg. 50 g of urea (NH2CONH2) is
dissolved in 850 g of water. Calculate the vapour pressure of water for this solution
and its relative lowering.
(ii) Calculate the osmotic pressure in pascals exerted by a solution prepared by
dissolving 1.0 g of polymer of molar mass 185,000 in 450 mL of water at 37°C.
15. 0.6 mL of Acetic acid having density 1.06g/mL, is dissolved in 1 Litre of water. The
depression in freezing point observed for this strength of acid was 0.02050C.
Calculate the Van’t Hoff factor and the dissociation constant of acid.
V. Answer the following 5x1= 5
(i) What role does the molecular interaction play in solution of alcohol in water?
(ii) Based on solute solvent interactions, arrange the following in order of increasing
solubility in n-octane and explain. Cyclohexane, KCl, CH3OH, CH3CN.
(iii) he depression in freezing point of water observed for the same amount of acetic
acid, trichloroacetic acid and trifluoroacetic acid increases in the order given
above. Explain briefly.
(iv) Define hypotonic, hypertonic and Isotonic solution.
(v) Molecular weight of Macromolecules determined by using osmotic pressure.
