Introduction

Climate change has emerged as a global phenomenon with far-reaching consequences

across various aspects of human life. One area where its impact is particularly pronounced is in
the realm of tourism. As the Earth’s climate undergoes significant shifts, the tourism industry
faces both challenges and opportunities. The intricate interplay between climate change and
tourism is a subject of growing concern and academic interest.

Tourism, a dynamic industry, plays a pivotal role in the global economy. However, the
very activities that contribute to its growth often intersect with environmental vulnerabilities,
exacerbating the effects of climate change. Changes in temperature, extreme weather events, and
alterations in ecosystems have the potential to reshape the landscapes that tourists seek to
explore. Understanding how climate change influences tourists’ perceptions and, subsequently,
their behavior in the realm of sustainable tourism is a critical endeavor.

The survey conducted from September 10 to 14 found that 65% of Filipino adults
observed that there was a “big change in the climate” in their area over the past three years. Pulse
Asia noted that the view was shared by small to huge majorities in all geographic areas and
socio-economic classes.

Southern Leyte, is known for its natural beaches and resorts with diverse ecosystems since it is
located in Pacific area, but it has been affected by climate change. We have experienced
devastating typhoons and extreme weather conditions that merely affects those tourist spots.
However, as the province witnesses an influx of tourists, there is a pressing need to understand
how tourists’ perceptions towards climate change shape their overall travel experience and
there’s no study has been conducted about this in the area. The research problem revolves around
uncovering the specific behavioral intentions of tourists in Southern Leyte concerning
sustainable tourism practices, aiming to bridge the gap in current knowledge and provide tailored
insights for local stakeholders.

The primary objective of this study is to explore and analyze the influence of tourists’
perceptions towards climate change on their overall travel experience, focusing on behavioral
intentions in sustainable tourism within the context of Southern Leyte. Specifically, the research
aims to: (1) Investigate tourists’ awareness and understanding of climate change issues in the
Southern Leyte tourism context. (2) Examine the relationship between tourists’ perceptions of
climate change and their behavioral intentions to engage in sustainable tourism practices. (3)
Assess the impact of climate change perceptions on the overall travel experience of tourists in
Southern Leyte. (4) Provide insights and recommendations for stakeholders in the Southern
Leyte tourism industry to enhance sustainable practices and improve tourists’ overall travel
experiences in the face of climate change challenges.
