Exercise 2.

3 – Defining Complex Numbers

 Learn the definition of a complex number z=a+biz = a + biz=a+bi

with a,ba, ba,b real.

 Practice listing elements from sets like {a+bi:a2+b2=1}\{a+bi :

a^2 + b^2 = 1\}{a+bi:a2+b2=1}.

⚙️Exercise 2.4 – Properties of Operations

 Verify that addition/multiplication of complex numbers satisfy

commutative/associative/distributive laws.

Sample: Show (z+w)+u=z+(w+u)(z + w) + u = z + (w + u)(z+w)+u=z+

(w+u) for arbitrary z,w,uz, w, uz,w,u.

🧍 Exercise 2.5 – Argand Plane

 Plot a few numbers on the complex plane.

 Given complex numbers, find their geometric locations in terms of a

and b.

📏 Exercise 2.6 – Modulus & Conjugate

 For z=a+biz = a + biz=a+bi:

o Conjugate z‾=a−bi\overline{z} = a - biz=a−bi

o ∣z∣=a2+b2|z| = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}∣z∣=a2+b2

 Practice computing these for various values.

➕✖️Exercise 2.7 – Operations

 Work through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division:

Example:
3+4i1−2i=−1+2i\frac{3 + 4i}{1 - 2i} = -1 + 2i1−2i3+4i=−1+2i
(as shown earlier in Chapter 1 demonstration)

🔁 Exercise 2.8 – Polar Form & De Moivre’s Theorem

 Convert complex numbers to polar form: z=r(cos⁡θ+isin⁡θ)z = r(\cos θ
+ i\sin θ)z=r(cosθ+isinθ).

 Apply De Moivre’s theorem for powers:

(r(cos⁡θ+isin⁡θ))n=rn(cos⁡(nθ)+isin⁡(nθ)) \big(r(\cos θ + i\sin θ)\big)^n
= r^n (\cos(nθ) + i\sin(nθ))(r(cosθ+isinθ))n=rn(cos(nθ)+isin(nθ))

Example: If z=2(cos⁡30°+isin⁡30°)z = 2(\cos30° + i\

sin30°)z=2(cos30°+isin30°), find z3z^3z3.

🧠 Sample Long Question Layout

Question: Prove that multiplication of two conjugates yields a real

number and find the result:
(a+bi)(a−bi).(a + bi)(a - bi).(a+bi)(a−bi).

Solution:
(a+bi)(a−bi)=a2−(bi)2=a2+b2.(a + bi)(a - bi) = a^2 - (bi)^2 = a^2 +
b^2.(a+bi)(a−bi)=a2−(bi)2=a2+b2.
