Course Objectives: To make the students familiarize with geological process
operating on the Earth and the processes of formation of minerals and rocks, their
utility to civil engineering projects and to make the students familiarize with
possible geological hazards.
1. General Geology:
Importance of engineering geology applied to civil engineering practices,
weathering, definition, types and effect, geological works of rivers, wind, glaciers
as agents of erosion, transportation and deposition.

Minerals, their identification, igneous, sedimentary & metamorphic rocks,
classification of rocks for engineering purposes, rock quality designation (RQD).

3. Structural Geology:
Brief idea about stratification, apparent dip, true dip, strikeand
inconformities,folds. Faults & joints: definition, classification relation to

4. Engineering Projects:
Geological considerations in the engineering projects like tunnels, highways, dams,

Uniaxial compression test, tensile test, permeability test, shear test, size and shape

Course Objectives: To understand the various methods and techniques of
surveying for computation of angles, distances and levels for a given area. To
understand the modern concepts related to aerial survey, GIS and GPS and remote
sensing.
1. Basics of Surveying:
Principles, generation of maps, Importance, application, conventional and
advanced methods.

2. Methods of Measurement:
Measurement of distances with chain and tape, offsets, chain tape corrections,
Survey stations, Survey lines- ranging, direct & indirect ranging; Compass Bearing
and its measurement with prismatic compass, calculation of angles from bearings,
Local Attraction.

3. Plane Table Surveying:
Setting up the plane table and methods of plane tabling (Radiation and three point
problem only)

4. Levelling and Contouring:
Principles of leveling, methods of levelling, finding levels by rise & fall method
and height of instrument method, corrections due to curvature and refraction,
reducing levels; differential, reciprocal leveling, profile levelling and cross
sectioning. Digital and Auto Level, Errors in leveling Characteristics of contours,
methods of contouring, uses of contour maps.

Course Objective: This course has been designed to cover heat interactions and
balance of energy between systems and its surroundings, modes of heat transfer,
and to learn about IC engines. The behavior of fluids at rest or in motion and the
subsequent effects and analyze flow through pipes.
List of Experiments:
1. To study of construction and operation of 2-stroke and 4-stroke petrol and
diesel engines using actual engines or models.
2. To study construction and working of various types of boilers.
3. To study construction, working and operation of a multi-stage reciprocating
air compressor.
4. Performance testing of 4-stroke, multi-cylinder diesel/petrol engine in terms
of brake power, indicated power, mechanical efficiency, specific fuel
consumption and heat balance sheet.
5. To verify Bernoulli’s energy equation for flow through a variable area duct.
6. To determine the coefficient of discharge for an obstruction flow meter
(venturimeter/orifice meter).
7. To ascertain the lower critical Reynolds number for transition of flow from
laminar to turbulent.
8. To determine the friction coefficients for pipes of different diameters.
9. To determine thermal conductivity of an insulating liquid/powder material.
10. To determine heat transfer coefficient at outer surface of a vertical tube
under free/ forced convection.
Course Outcomes:

1. Determine dryness fraction of steam and estimation of brake power.
2. Perform testing of 4-stroke, multi-cylinder diesel/petrol engine.

Course Objective: Main Objective of Computer Aided Civil Engineering Lab I is to
introduce the students to the visual science in the form of technical graphics and
students will prepare computer aided drawings of respective subjects which is used
professionally in civil engineering field
Introduction to computer aided drafting: Review of CAD drafting software
1. Concept of setup of engineering drawing sheets, exercise based upon draw
commands like lines, circle, arc, polygon, ellipse, polyline, spline, ray, reference
line etc.
2. Exercise based upon modifying commands like extend, trim, scale, copy, move,
hatching, fillet, chamfer, array etc.
CAD Drawing Exercises: Fluid Mechanics, building Material and Construction,
