Lesson 2

People say, Sanskrit helps with improved brain functions, speech corrections,
memory recall etc. I say, experience it and figure out for yourself,
aatmapramaana (आत्मप्रमाण) as it is called.

But first, you should know what are the letters of the Sanskrit language called?

Ans: They are called अक्षराणण (Aksharāni).

vowels

Here are the 14 Sanskrit Vowels:

अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ऋ ॠ लृ ॡ ए ऐ ओ औ
a ā i ī u ū ṛ ṝ ḷ ḹ e ai o au
aṃ aḥ
We include the long vowel ॡ here for the sake of being complete, but it is never used
in real Sanskrit.

In general, short and long vowels are written in a similar way. Notice the similarities
between अ and आ, इ and ई, उ and ऊ, ऋ and ॠ, and ऌ and ॡ. This pattern also applies
to ए and ऐ, as well as ओ and औ. In each pair, notice that the second symbol adds some
mark or extra feature to the first.
