Increase in Length of Steel Wire Calculation

The document presents a problem involving the stretching of a steel wire, providing its length, diameter, applied force, and Young's modulus. It outlines the necessary parameters for calculating the increase in length of the wire under the specified conditions. The values given include a wire length of 400 cm, a radius of 0.2 cm, a force of 49000 dyne, and a Young's modulus of 2.4 x 10^12 dyne/cm².

Q. A steel wire of length 2m and diameter 4 mm is stretched by 5 kg-wt.

Find the increase in

its length, if the Young’s modulus of steel wire is 2.4 1012 dyne/cm2.

Soln: Here,
L = 4m = 400 cm

and, 2r = 4 mm r = 2 mm = 0.2 cm;

and, F = 5 kg wt. = 5000 g-wt. = 5000 980 dyne;
and, Y = 2.4 1012 dyne/cm2
We have,
