Oromotor Stimulation in Preterm Newborns

The dissertation investigates the effectiveness of oromotor stimulation on preterm newborns to facilitate early full feeding and reduce hospital stay duration at IMS & SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. It aims to assess feeding difficulties, compare outcomes between experimental and control groups, and explore correlations between gestational age and hospital stay. The study assumes that oromotor stimulation will improve feeding performance and weight gain while shortening hospital stays for preterm infants.

ABSTRACT

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM.

"Effectiveness of Oromotor Stimulation on Preterm Newborn for the Early Achievement of

full feeding and shorter duration of Hospital Stay in Selected IMS & SUM Hospital,
Bhubaneswar, Odisha."

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

 To assess the feeding difficulty in preterm

 To compare the effectiveness of oromotor stimulation in experimental and control group.

 To find out the correlation between the pre-term baby and feeding difficulty in control and experimental
group.

 To compare the Length of hospital stay in control group and experimental group

 To find out the correlation between gestational age and hospital stay.

ASSUMPTIONS

The study assumes that

1. Oromotor stimulation can improve the feeding performance.

2. Oromotor stimulation can shorten hospital stay.

3. Oromotor stimulation can help to gain weight of the preterm babies.

DELIMITATION

The study was delimited to the preterm babies

1. With gestational age between 24-36 weeks

2. Admitted in NICU
3. With feeding problem

xiv
HYPOTHESIS

HO- There is no significant improvement of feeding performance after the

oromotor stimulation

H1- There is significant improvement of feeding performance after the oromotor stimulation

H2- There is significant gaining of weight after oromotor stimulation

H3- There is significant shorter hospital stay after oromotor stimulation.

OPERATIONAL DEFINITION

Effectiveness-Refers to the extent to which the oromotor stimulation achieve the desired result
in taking full feeding, weight gain, and duration of hospital stay in terms of difference in control
group and experimental group.

Preterm- Baby born with gestational age between 24 weeks to 36 weeks and admitted in NICU.

Oromotor Stimulus - Oromotor stimulation is an application of pressure by stroking the cheeks,

the NICU stay till the time of discharge.
