Piroxicam Drug Study Overview

Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to treat rheumatoid diseases by reversibly inhibiting the cyclooxygenase enzyme and blocking prostaglandin production, which reduces inflammation. Common side effects include rash, headaches, dizziness, abdominal pain, nausea, and constipation. It should not be used in patients with aspirin sensitivity or previous hypersensitivity reactions. Nurses should instruct patients to take it with food and avoid other medications without physician approval. Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections by inhibiting bacterial DNA replication. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and joint pain. It is contraindicated

DRUG STUDY Name of Drug Piroxicam (Feldene) Classification Indication Action The anti- inflammatory effect of Piroxicam may

result from the reversible inhibition of cyclooxygenase, causing the peripheral inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. The prostaglandins are produced by an enzyme called Cox-1. Piroxicam blocks the Cox-1 enzyme, resulting into the disruption of production of prostaglandins. Piroxicam also inhibits the migration of leukocytes into sites of inflammation and prevents the formation of thromboxane A2, an aggregating agent, by the platelets Adverse Reaction Rash Headaches Dizziness Drowsiness Abdominal pain Nausea Constipation Fluid retention Ringing in the ears Photosensitivity Intestinal bleeding Ulcers Stomach ulceration Contraindication Nursing Responsibilities

Non-Steroidal Piroxicam is used Anti-Inflammatory primarily for the Drug (NSAIDs) treatment of rheumatoid diseases.

Piroxicam should not be used Administer to patient in patients who have whole; give with food previously exhibited or milk to decrease hypersensitivity to it or in gastric symptoms. individuals with the syndrome Instruct patient to comprised of bronchospasm, avoid aspirin, alcoholic nasal polyps, and angioedema beverages, and other precipitated by aspirin or over the counter other nonsteroidal antimedications unless inflammatory drugs. approved by the physician. Instruct patient to use caution when driving or performing activities that require alertness because drowsiness and dizziness may occur.

Name of Classification Indication Drug Ciprofloxacin Anti-bacterial For the treatment of the following infections caused by susceptible organisms: urinary tract infections, acute uncomplicated cystitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, lower respiratory tract infections, acute sinusitis, skin and skin structure infections, bone and joint infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections (used in combination with metronidazole), infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever (enteric fever), uncomplicated cervical and urethral gonorrhea, and inhalational anthrax (post-exposure).

Action The bactericidal action of ciprofloxacin results from inhibition of the enzymes topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV, which are required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, strand super coiling repair, and recombination.

Adverse Reaction Nausea Vomiting Stomach pain Heartburn Diarrhea Feeling an urgent need to urinate Headache Hives Difficulty breathing or swallowing Hoarseness or throat tightness Rapid, irregular, or pounding heartbeat Fainting Fever Joint or muscle pain Unusual bruising or bleeding Extreme tiredness Lack of energy of appetite Seizures Dizziness Confusion Nervousness Restlessness Anxiety Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep Pain in the upper right part of the stomach Yellowing of the skin or eyes Dark urine

Contraindication Ciprofloxacin is contraindicated in persons with a history of hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin, any member of the quinolone class of antimicrobial agents, or any of the product components. Co-administration of ciprofloxacin with other drugs primarily metabolized byCYP1A2results in increased plasma concentrations of these drugs and could lead to clinically significant adverse events of the co-administered drug. Contraindicated for the treatment of certain sexually transmitted diseases by some experts due to bacterial resistance. Concomitant administration with tizanidine is contraindicated.

Nursing Responsibilities Prevention or treatment of infection; signs and symptoms of infection like fever and pain are reduced. Make sure to drink plenty of water or other fluids everyday while taking Ciprofloxacin. Do not take or eat a lot of caffeine products such as coffee, tea, energy drinks, cola or chocolate within 6 hours before or 2hours after you take ciprofloxacin. Tell patients that antacids and mineral supplements may decrease the absorption of Ciprofloxacin which makes it less effective when taken at the same time.

Name of Drug Salbutamol Neb

Classification Anti-asthmatic

Indication Relief and prevention of bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway disease. Inhalation: treatment of acute attacks of bronchospasm. Prevention of exerciseinduced bronchospas m. Unlabeled use: adjunct in treating serious hyperkalemia in dialysis patients; seems to lower potassium concentrat ion when inhaled by patients on hemodialysis.

Prepare solution for inhalation by diluting 0.5ml 0.5% solution with 2.5ml normal saline; deliver over 5 15 minutes by nebulization. Do not exceed the recommended dosage; administer pressurized inhalation drug forms during second half of inspiration, because the airways are open wider and the aerosol distribution is more extensive.
