Equilibrium Problems in Statics 213

The document presents a series of sample problems related to the equilibrium of concurrent force systems in statics. Each problem includes a description of the scenario, the forces involved, and the calculated answers for various forces and angles. The problems cover different setups, including cables, inclined planes, and truss systems.

STATICS 213

SAMPLE PROBLEMS II

EQUILIBRIUM OF CONCURRENT FORCE SYSTEM

PROBLEM 1

The cable and boom shown in Fig. P-308 support a load of 600 lb. Determine the tensile
force T in the cable and the compressive force C in the boom.

Answer: 𝑇 = 439.24 𝑙𝑏 and 𝐶 = 537.94 𝑙𝑏

PROBLEM 2

A cylinder weighing 400 lb. is held against a smooth incline by means of the weightless rod AB
in Fig. P-309. Determine the forces P and N exerted on the cylinder by the rod and the incline.

Answer: 𝑁 = 418.60 𝑙𝑏 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑃 = 378.34 𝑙𝑏

PROBLEM 3

A 300-lb box is held at rest on a smooth plane by a force P inclined at an angle θ with the
plane as shown in Fig. P-310. If θ = 45°, determine the value of P and the normal
pressure N exerted by the plane.

Answer: 𝑃 = 212.13 𝑙𝑏 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑁 = 409.81 𝑙𝑏

Problem 4:

Determine the magnitude of P and F necessary to keep the concurrent force system in Fig. P-
312 in equilibrium.

Answer: 𝑃 = −133.25 𝑁 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐹 = 86.37 𝑁

Problem 5:

Figure P-313 represents the concurrent force system acting at a joint of a bridge truss.
Determine the value of P and E to maintain equilibrium of the forces.

Answer: 𝑃 = 165.45 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐹 = 412.44 𝑙𝑏

Problem 6:

The five forces shown in Fig. P-314 are in equilibrium. Compute the values of P and F.

Answer: 𝐹 = −12.63 𝑘𝑁 𝑎𝑛𝑑 − 5.31 𝑘𝑁

Problem 7:

The 300-lb force and the 400-lb force shown in Fig. P-315 are to be held in equilibrium by a third
force F acting at an unknown angle θ with the horizontal. Determine the values of F and θ.

Answer: 𝐹 = 205.31 𝑙𝑏 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜃 = 103.06°

Problem 8:

Determine the values of α and θ so that the forces shown in Fig. P-316 will be in equilibrium

Answer: 𝛼 = 46.57° 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜃 = 28.96°

Problem 9:

The system of knotted cords shown in Fig. P-317 support the indicated weights. Compute the
tensile force in each cord.

Answer: 𝐷 = 207.06 𝑙𝑏, 𝐵 = 914.16 𝑙𝑏, 𝐴 = 846.41 𝑙𝑏, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶 = 400 𝑙𝑏
