Quantum Numbers: Key Concepts Explained

Quantum numbers are used to describe the state and position of an electron in an atom, consisting of four types: Principal (n), Azimuthal (l), Magnetic (ml), and Spin (ms). Each quantum number provides specific information about energy levels, orbital shapes, orientations, and electron spin. The Pauli Exclusion Principle states that no two electrons can have the same set of all four quantum numbers.

Quantum Numbers - 5 Mark Notes

Quantum Numbers - Short Notes

Quantum numbers describe the state and position of an electron in an atom. There are four types:

1. Principal Quantum Number (n)

- Indicates the main energy level or shell.

- Values: n = 1, 2, 3, ...

- Higher n means higher energy and larger orbit.

2. Azimuthal Quantum Number (l)

- Describes the shape of the orbital (subshell).

- Values: l = 0 to n-1

- Shapes:

l = 0: s

l = 1: p

l = 2: d

l = 3: f

3. Magnetic Quantum Number (ml)

- Tells the orientation of orbitals.

- Values: ml = -l to +l

4. Spin Quantum Number (ms)

- Describes electron spin.

- Values: +1/2 or -1/2
