Surged Faradic Current for Muscle Stimulation

Surged faradic current is an electrical stimulation technique that alternates the intensity of faradic current to induce muscle contractions and relaxations. Proper preparation and positioning of the patient are essential, including checking the apparatus, ensuring comfort, and preparing the treatment area. The current should be gradually increased while monitoring the patient's comfort and response during the treatment.

FARADIC CURRENT

Surged Faradic Type Current

Surged faradic current is a type of
electrical stimulation that gradually
increases and decreases the intensity
of a faradic current to produce muscle
contractions and relaxations
• Preparation of apparatus:

i. Check whether all the knobs are at zero.

ii. Checking the pins of the plug and check whether

the switch is turned off.

iii. Check the insulation of the wire.

iv. Check whether the switch in the stimulator is

working.
v. Check whether fuse is present in the
apparatus; see that it is not blown out.

vi. Check whether hand switch for patients use is

intact and is working.

vii. Test the apparatus by attaching leads and

electrodes to the terminals holding the two
electrode in the moistened hand.
• Positioning of the patient:

i. Position the patient in such a way that it is

comfortable to the patient.

ii. Part to be treated must be exposed and should

be at adequate distance from the modality.
iii. Remove the clothing from the area to be
treated
iv. Support the part to be treated in shortened position.
For example, for training the quadriceps, it may be arranged in slight
flexion so that the extension takes place when muscles are stimulated.
v. Wash the area to be treated with soap or water to remove the natural
oils and moisten with saline before applying the pads. In this way the
resistance of the skin is also reduced.
vi. Any skin lesion can cause marked reduction in the resistance which
naturally results in concentration of the current and consequent
discomfort to the patient.
To avoid this broken skin is protected by petroleum jelly with the small
piece of non absorbent cotton wool to protect the pad.

Regulating the current:

i. Gradually increase the current.
ii. Keep talking with the patient about the feel of the current.
iii. Tell him to inform you immediately about any inconvenience,
discomfort or burning.

Palpating tendon:
Feel the contraction by palpating the tendon.
