Emphatic Inversion
🔍 What is it? (Definition – Complete the blanks)
In English, we sometimes change the usual word order (subject + verb) for special
reasons.
This is called Emphatic Inversion, and it is used for __________, __________, or
__________ effect.
It’s especially common in formal writing, storytelling, and when we want to highlight
something surprising or important.

Look at the examples and complete the rule.
Examples:
Never have I seen such a beautiful view.
Rarely does she complain about anything.
Not only did he arrive late, but he also forgot his notes.
Hardly had they left when it started to rain.
🔧 Structure for inversion with negative adverbials:
[Negative/limiting adverb] + __________ + subject + __________ + rest of sentence
-Use this when the sentence starts with adverbs like: Never, Rarely, Seldom, Hardly,
Scarcely, Only then, Not only, No sooner...
