Class 12 Biology - Chapter 2: Human Reproduction
1. Male Reproductive System
- Consists of a pair of testes (in scrotum), ducts (rete testis, vasa efferentia, epididymis, vas deferens),
accessory glands (seminal vesicles, prostate, bulbourethral), and penis.
- Testes produce sperm and testosterone. Seminiferous tubules are the site of spermatogenesis.
- Sertoli cells support sperm formation; Leydig cells secrete testosterone.
2. Spermatogenesis
- Process of sperm formation, begins at puberty.
- Spermatogonia (diploid) -> Primary spermatocyte -> Secondary spermatocyte -> Spermatid -> Sperm.
- Controlled by hormones: FSH, LH, testosterone.
3. Structure of Sperm
- Head (with nucleus and acrosome), middle piece (with mitochondria), and tail (for motility).
4. Female Reproductive System
- Includes a pair of ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina, and external genitalia.
- Ovaries produce ova and hormones (estrogen, progesterone).
- Fallopian tubes transport ovum, site of fertilization.
5. Oogenesis
- Process of ovum formation.
- Oogonia (diploid) -> Primary oocyte -> Secondary oocyte -> Ovum.
- Begins before birth, completes after fertilization.
6. Menstrual Cycle
- Regular cyclic changes in female reproductive tract (~28 days).
- Phases: Menstrual (15 days), Follicular (613), Ovulation (14), Luteal (1528).
- Controlled by hormones: FSH, LH, estrogen, progesterone.
Class 12 Biology - Chapter 2: Human Reproduction
7. Fertilization and Implantation
- Fertilization occurs in ampulla of fallopian tube.
- Sperm + Ovum -> Zygote -> Morula -> Blastocyst -> Implantation in uterus.
8. Pregnancy and Embryonic Development
- Placenta forms connection between mother and embryo.
- Produces hCG, estrogen, progesterone.
- Embryo -> Foetus; gestation ~9 months.
9. Parturition and Lactation
- Parturition (childbirth) is triggered by hormones like oxytocin.
- Lactation: Milk production by prolactin; ejection by oxytocin.
