Class 12 Biology - Chapter 2: Human Reproduction

1. Male Reproductive System

- Consists of: A pair of testes (in scrotum), accessory ducts, and glands.

- Testes: Oval organs, 4-5 cm long. Located outside abdominal cavity in scrotum (maintains 2-2.5C lower

temperature essential for spermatogenesis).

- Each testis has seminiferous tubules (site of sperm production) and interstitial (Leydig) cells (secrete

testosterone).

- Sertoli cells: Provide nourishment to developing sperms.

- Accessory ducts: Rete testis, vasa efferentia, epididymis, vas deferens. Help transport sperm.

- Accessory glands: Seminal vesicles, prostate, bulbourethral glands. Secrete fluid part of semen (nourishes

and activates sperm).

2. Spermatogenesis

- Process of sperm formation from spermatogonia. Begins at puberty due to increased GnRH.

- Spermatogonia (2n) divide mitotically to form primary spermatocytes (2n).

- Primary spermatocytes undergo meiosis I to form secondary spermatocytes (n).

- Secondary spermatocytes undergo meiosis II to form spermatids (n).

- Spermatids mature into spermatozoa (spermiogenesis).

- Sertoli cells release them into lumen (spermiation).

- Hormones: FSH stimulates Sertoli cells; LH stimulates Leydig cells to secrete testosterone.

3. Structure of Sperm

- Head: Contains nucleus and acrosome (enzymes to digest egg layers).

- Middle piece: Packed with mitochondria for energy.

- Tail: Helps in motility.

- Sperm is a haploid, motile male gamete.

4. Female Reproductive System

- Consists of: Ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina, external genitalia.

- Ovaries: Almond-shaped, produce ova and hormones (estrogen, progesterone).

Class 12 Biology - Chapter 2: Human Reproduction

- Fallopian tubes: Infundibulum (with fimbriae), ampulla (site of fertilization), isthmus.

- Uterus: Muscular organ with endometrium (inner layer), myometrium (muscle layer).

- Vagina: Receives sperm, birth canal during delivery.

- Bartholin glands: Secrete mucus for lubrication.

5. Oogenesis

- Formation of ovum in ovary.

- Begins before birth. Oogonia (2n) divide to form primary oocytes (2n), arrested in prophase I until puberty.

- At puberty, primary oocyte completes meiosis I -> secondary oocyte (n) + first polar body.

- Secondary oocyte arrested in metaphase II; completes meiosis II only if fertilized.

- One ovum and two polar bodies are formed.

6. Menstrual Cycle

- Cycle of changes in the ovary and uterus (~28 days).

- Menstrual phase (15 days): Shedding of endometrial lining due to drop in progesterone and estrogen.

- Follicular phase (613 days): FSH stimulates follicle growth; estrogen rebuilds endometrium.

- Ovulation (Day 14): LH surge causes release of ovum from Graafian follicle.

- Luteal phase (1528 days): Corpus luteum forms, secretes progesterone to maintain endometrium.

- If no fertilization: Corpus luteum degenerates, hormone levels fall, menstruation begins.

7. Fertilization and Implantation

- Fertilization occurs in ampulla of fallopian tube.

- Sperm penetrates zona pellucida of ovum; acrosomal enzymes help.

- Nuclei fuse to form zygote (2n).

- Zygote -> 2, 4, 8 cells (cleavage) -> Morula -> Blastocyst.

- Blastocyst implants in endometrium around day 6-7 post fertilization.

8. Pregnancy and Embryonic Development

- Pregnancy: Period of embryo development (~9 months).

Class 12 Biology - Chapter 2: Human Reproduction

- Placenta: Formed by fetal chorion and maternal tissue; exchange of nutrients, gases, waste.

- Secretes hCG, estrogen, progesterone (maintain pregnancy).

- Embryo: 3 germ layers form (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm).

- Major organs form by 12 weeks; fetal movements by 5 months.

9. Parturition and Lactation

- Parturition: Process of childbirth. Triggered by oxytocin and relaxin.

- Oxytocin: Causes uterine contractions; positive feedback loop.

- Lactation: Prolactin stimulates milk production; oxytocin helps milk ejection.

- Colostrum: First milk, rich in antibodies (IgA), provides passive immunity.
