1. Introduction
Solar energy is a renewable and eco-friendly source of energy derived from the sun's
radiation. This project demonstrates how solar panels convert sunlight into electricity,
which can be used for lighting or powering small appliances.
2. Objectives
- To understand the working of photovoltaic (PV) cells
- To demonstrate electricity generation using a solar panel
- To highlight the importance of clean energy
- To encourage sustainable practices among students
3. Materials Used
- Small solar panel (3V–6V)
- DC motor / LED light
- Connecting wires
- Cardboard (for mounting)
- Switch
- Battery (optional for storage demonstration)
4. Working Principle
Solar panels are made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells that convert sunlight into direct current
(DC) electricity through the photovoltaic effect. When sunlight hits the silicon cells in the
panel, it knocks electrons loose, creating a flow of electricity.

6. Working Explanation
When the solar panel is exposed to sunlight, it generates DC electricity. This electricity flows
through a switch and powers an LED light or a small fan/motor. The project can optionally
store energy in a rechargeable battery for later use.
7. Applications
- Home lighting systems
- Solar street lights
- Solar water heaters
- Power backup systems
- Rural electrification
8. Advantages & Limitations
**Advantages:**
- Renewable and sustainable
- No pollution
- Low maintenance
**Limitations:**
- Depends on sunlight availability
- Initial setup cost
- Storage systems (batteries) are expensive
9. Conclusion
This project highlights the potential of solar energy as a sustainable alternative to fossil
fuels. It encourages the adoption of clean energy technologies to combat climate change and
reduce carbon footprint.
