Short Wave Diathermy (SWD) Practical Procedure – Detailed

Checklist
1. Receive and Prepare the Patient
• ☐ Greet the patient professionally.
• ☐ Confirm name, age, and area of pain/injury.
• ☐ Explain the procedure in simple language.
• ☐ Take informed consent.

2. Check Contraindications and Precautions


• ☐ Ask about metal implants, pacemakers, pregnancy, etc.
• ☐ Check for active infections, tumors, wounds, or sensory loss.

3. Prepare the Treatment Area


• ☐ Remove all metal objects (jewelry, belt, phone, coins).
• ☐ Expose and clean the treatment area.
• ☐ Place a dry towel over the skin.

4. Position the Patient


• ☐ Ensure patient is relaxed and comfortable.
• ☐ Use pillows/support as needed.
• ☐ Maintain modesty and dignity.

5. Prepare the Machine


• ☐ Check machine function.
• ☐ Set mode: Pulsed (acute) or Continuous (chronic).
• ☐ Choose electrodes and placement method.
• ☐ Set intensity (Dose I–IV) and treatment time.

6. Application of SWD
• ☐ Place electrodes at equal distance (~2–3 cm from skin).
• ☐ Ensure no metal is in the field.
• ☐ Switch on the machine and gradually increase intensity.
• ☐ Ask patient if they feel mild warmth.

7. Monitor During Treatment


• ☐ Stay nearby or check the patient regularly.
• ☐ Look for signs of discomfort, redness, or burning.
8. End of Treatment
• ☐ Turn off machine before touching electrodes.
• ☐ Remove electrodes and towel.
• ☐ Check skin for any adverse reactions.
• ☐ Assist patient to sit up safely.

9. Post-Treatment Follow-Up
• ☐ Ask for patient feedback.
• ☐ Provide post-care advice if needed.
• ☐ Document area treated, mode, intensity, time, and response.

10. Clean-Up
• ☐ Clean electrodes and equipment.
• ☐ Reset machine settings to default.
• ☐ Sanitize and store equipment properly.
• ☐ Wash hands after the procedure.
