Basic Biological Principles

Background Information:
Properties of Life

All living organisms share the following basic properties: Cellular Organization,
Metabolism, Homeostasis, Growth and Reproduction, Heredity, Response to Stimuli.

Cellular organization indicates that all living organisms are composed of cells.
Metabolism means that all living organisms. Homeostasis is the process whereby all
living organisms maintain stable internal conditions. The properties of growth and
reproduction indicate that all living organisms grow in size and reproduce. The property
of heredity describes how all living organisms possess genetic information in DNA that
determines how each organism looks and functions, and this information is passed on to
future generations. Response to stimuli refers to the capability of living things to
produce reactions from rapid changes called stimuli.

Organization of Life

Living organisms exhibit increasing levels of complexity within their cells (cellular
level), within their bodies (organismal level), and within ecosystems (populational level)

Characteristics of Life:
Part 1.

1. What are the properties that define a living organism?

 The properties that define a living organism are Cellular Organization,

Metabolism, Homeostasis, Growth and Reproduction, Heredity, Response to
Stimuli.

2. Can we consider an organism living if it lacks any of these characteristics? Explain why or
why not?
 We can’t consider an organism if it is living thing when it is lack any of those
characteristics because each characteristic enables the organism's survival, so
if any are lost, the organism is in risk.

3. A stone and an ant are in the same room. Contrast the characteristics of life that might
apply to either one. Identify which is living and why.

 A stone is a non-living thing because it doesn't evolve, move, reproduce, need

energy, or maintain their homeostasis while an ant is a living thing because
ants do have cells, cellular organization is one of the characteristics of life. An
ant is a living organism because it is an animal, from eusocial insects of the
family Formicidae. It also possesses a life characteristic because ants can
reproduce, respond to human disturbances by biting, have heredity, have the
ability to diversify their species, and produce offspring because ants fertilized
eggs. Additionally, ant colonies transmit fluids that are transported from
mouth to mouth in order to develop a colony-wide metabolism. Besides
changing nest accumulation and alternately fumigating their nests, ants,
according to my research, can reduce potential waste.

A 4. Which of the following characteristics of living things explains why plants exhibit
phototropism, or the ability of plants to bend toward the sunlight?
A. Living things respond to their environment
B. Living things maintain homeostasis
C. Living things are made of cells

ACROSS
2. In cells, structures called chromosomes contain genetic material in the form of what?
3. Organelle where Electron Transport Chain and Kreb's Cycle take place.
5. "the royal disease", an inherited bleeding disorder where blood does not clot properly
6. Plural noun. Any change in an organism’s environment that causes the organism to react.
10. A unicellular organism with a shape resembling the sole of a shoe

DOWN
1. Is the chemical reactions in the body's cells that change food into energy.
4. A self-regulating process by which biological systems maintain stability while adjusting to
changing external conditions
7. Energy currency of the cell
8. The transmission of characteristics from parent to offspring
9. An Organism’s Basic Unit of Structure and Function

Levels of Organization:
1. Starting with the molecular level, write a sentence that includes components from
the previous (lower) level of biological organization, for example: “A molecule
consists of atoms bonded together.” Continue with organelles, moving up the
biological hierarchy.

 Atoms are bound together to form molecules.

 Each organelle has molecules arranged in a specific way.
 Photosynthesis are organelles found in photosynthetic plant cells.
 Each tissue is made up of a collection of related cells.
 The heart is one of many organs that are made up of various tissues.
 There are many different types of organs in a complex multicellular
organism like a plant, including leaves and roots.
 Species-specific groups of organisms are referred to as populations.
 Populations of the various species that live in a particular area make up a
community.

(b) blood, which is made up of a group of cells and – CELLULAR LEVEL

(c) a bacteria- CELLULAR LEVEL
