Understanding Process Automation Benefits

Process automation involves the use of automatic equipment to control manufacturing processes, enhancing productivity, quality, and safety while reducing manpower and time. The future of automation is expected to significantly impact the workforce across various industries, with devices like sensors, controllers, and actuators playing key roles. PID controllers are widely used for their accuracy in regulating process variables, with advantages over PLC controllers in specific applications.

PROCESS AUTOMATION

INTRODUCTION
• WHAT IS PROCESS AUTOMATION
• FUTURE SCOPE OF PROCESS AUTOMATION
• BENEFITS OF PROCESS AUTOMATION
• WHAT ARE THE DEVICES &SOFTWARE WE USED
WHAT IS PROCESS AUTOMATION
•Automation is the use of largely automatic
equipment in a system of manufacturing or
the production process.
•A process automation or automation
system (PAS) is used to automatically
control a process such as chemical, oil
refineries, paper and pulp factories.
BENEFITS OF PROCESS AUTOMATION
• Increses productivity
• Enhance Quality
• Industrial safety
• Accurate result
• Easy to find out the error
• Reduce the man power
• increases speed of delivery
• Economical
• Reduce Time
FUTURE SCOPE OF PROCESS AUTOMATION
• In fact, automated machines are expected to replace almost
half of the global workforce.
• Multiple industries, from manufacturing to banking, are
adopting automation to drive productivity, safety,
profitability, and quality.
• Automation will bolster connectivity and reliability in a
hyper-competitive ecosystem.
WHAT ARE THE DEVICES AND SOFTWARE USED
The process automation involves:-
• Sensors
• Controllers(PLC,SCADA)
• Actuators
• computer technology and software of engineering
What is pid
• A PID controller is an instrument used in industrial control
applications to regulate temperature, flow, pressure, speed and
other process variables. PID (proportional integral derivative)
controllers use a control loop feedback mechanism to control process
variables and are the most accurate and stable controller.
Why PID controller is widely used?

• Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers are used in most

automatic process control applications in industry today to regulate
flow, temperature, pressure, level, and many other industrial
process variables
• PID controllers are so popular because they can be used for a wide
variety of real applications successfully such as industrial process
control, robotics, mechatronics systems, and many more
P Controller:

P controller is mostly used in first order processes with single energy

storage to stabilize the unstable process. The main usage of the P
controller is to decrease the steady state error of the system. As the
proportional gain factor K increases, the steady state error of the
system decreases.
Which is better PI or PD controller?

• In terms of speed, PID controller has the fastest response as it shows

the fastest time constant of 0.17s and settling time compared to the
PD and PI Controllers, however in terms of Damping the PD controller
has the best performance because no overshoot was observed at
steady state compared to the PI and PID ...
What is P PI PD PID controller?

It determines the deviation of the system and produces the control

signal that reduces the deviation to 0 and small value. The manner in
which the automatic controller produces the control signal is called the
control action
Advantages of PID Controller
• a) Improving the stability of the system.
• b) Reduces the steady-state error.
• c) Feasible and easy to implement.
• d) Makes the system faster by reducing the time constant.
What are the advantages of PLC over PID
controller?
• As PID is used for controlling and monitoring for a particular
motor/machine, but PLC is used for controlling of many motors as
required also can monitor through SCADA.
• So, the future work will be to control total process/system by using
more than one motor, which can save both power and time.
What is actuator and its function?

• An actuator is a device that produces a motion by converting energy

and signals going into the system. The motion it produces can be
either rotary or linear. An actuator is a device that produces a motion
