INTRO - LESSON 2

LESSON GOAL: The Lesson Goal is for the students to further work on
introducing themselves and discuss two PPD topics: Strategic
Planning and Coaching, and think about who they are as students.
1. The class will be in U-shape and start by linking the previous
lesson with the present one, by chatting about their research
and doing the activity “What We Need to Learn”.
They will show the result of the home research, by doing Task A
and answering what useful information about themselves they
could say when introducing themselves. The answers will be
written on the board, and the ones that will be studied at this
class – Nationality, Marital Status, Profession – will be circled. If
none of the students brought those subjects, the teacher will
write them on the board.
Next the teacher will write on the board the dialogue: “Ann – Are
you a dentist? Teacher – No, I’m not a dentist. I’m a teacher.”,
so that we show that you also need to know the negative and
interrogative forms of the verb to be, along with articles. We
will bring attention to those elements by circling them.
After that we will explore the images in Task B, and answer it,
but also taking the time to let the students think about
themselves and understand how the learning English can relate
to their life. The teacher will also write on the board the
keywords – Coaching, Strategic Planning – before starting the
discussion.
Then he will write: “Think about yourself” and “Develop
Strategies” so that the students have a clear view of the PPD
topics and linguistics elements that will be seen in this class.
We will correct the students by using Group Correction – a
technique that the whole class helps a student who made a
mistake – and Recasting – in which the teacher will teacher will
repeat what the student said, but correctly. (9 – 12 Min.)

2. In groups or pairs, in this case a group of four and another

group of three, the students will watch a video about the verb
To Be, to start the “Going Further” activity. The teacher will
write, on the board, a sentence that uses the verb To Be in the
affirmative form, for example, “I am a teacher” (so that can also
connect with the content of Professions), and ask the students
to put it in negative and interrogative forms. The answers will
be put on the board.
Next, the students will answer task A, with the teacher
supervising the groups, and correct the task after 7 minutes.
For task B, the part of the video about nationalities will be
played and they will have 7 minutes to finish it. The teacher will
supervise and help the groups find patterns to complete the
task. When it’s time to correct, the teacher must bring attention
to the importance of patterns, and their importance in learning.
The parts about marital status and professions of the video will
be played, and the students will have to complete the puzzles,
having also 7 minutes to finish it.
The teacher can help the students by creating strategies with
them, such as counting the number of words.
In this activity there will probably occur a Vocabulary
Investigation. To help with that, the teacher can use the digital
resources available to him.
To finish this activity, the teacher will show the last part of the
video, about articles, and ask simple questions, such as When
do we use A or An?”, and “Do we use A or An before plural
nouns?”. Next, the students will help Francesco and Laura, from
the previous class, to correct their mistakes.
The correction technique used here will be the Group Correction
and Class Correction, both which make the students an active
part of the correction. (30 – 35 Min.)

3. The students will do this activity, “Making It Better”,

individually. On task A, the students will add the new elements
they learned in this class to their presentation from the last
class. The teacher has to make the students understand that a
presentation can say a lot about yourself. After thinking about
themselves for 5 minutes, about their weakness and strengths,
qualities and weakness, the students will choose the picture
they think defines them best, that defines their characteristics
and who they are, not just their profession, and justify it.
Explain that this is part of a self-discover journey and that this
process is constant.
The class will help each other to correct their mistakes. (15-20
Min.)

4. Groups of four will be formed, based on the chosen pictures

from the last activity. The teacher will ask that the group formed
is different from the previous activity, so that all the class
interacts with each other.
The students will have 7 minutes to interview each other and
write their information. After that, the information will be
presented and the students will choose they are most similar to
them. While the students are interacting, the teacher must be
aware and take notes of the mistakes made by them, for
feedback. This activity has not only the goal of practicing
linguistic elements, but also to make the students realize that
we can identify ourselves in others, and that essential for self-
discovery. (15-20 Min.)

5. For the “Who am I as a student?” activity, the class will be U-

Shaped. The teacher will read all the sentences and options
with the students, while explaining their meanings by using the
pictures. Then the students will choose their answers in task A,
and with those answers, the class will think on strategies to
improve their learning process. For example, sharing apps and
websites to train their listening and speaking. It’s important to
emphasize that the more they know themselves as students,
the better they can improve their studies and self-awareness is
a constant in the student’s life. Here the teacher will use
Recasting as the correction method.
6. For Next Class: Finish the class, in Portuguese, by reviewing the
topics seen in this class and that PPD topics will help them
refine various aspects of their life. Make the students
understand that just coming to class will not be enough and
that they have to have a home study plan, and that it’s crucial
to their learning that they do the activities for next class.
Explain the research, that they will have to write positive and
negative aspects of themselves. Also explain “For Further
Practice”: write sentences to introduce their favorite celebrities,
and record your new introduction, prepared on this class.
