How to create
your problem tree
Creating a problem tree is a great activity to help you narrow down your focus when creating
content. It can be applied for various purposes but the goal is always the same: hone in your
focus. See how to create one and give it a shot yourself below.
Step 1:
Start by outlining the greater transformation you want
to offer your audience, that goes at the top of the tree.
Step 2:
Break your greater transformation down into smaller
problems that make up that problem. Try three smaller
problems to get started.
Step 3:
From here, you can go as many levels down as you want
to unlock topics your content can focus around.

See it in action:
If you’re an expert on vinyl records, let’s say you want to teach your audience of beginner
record collectors how to shop for gear and choose the right record player to start out with.
You want to take them from not knowing anything about record players to understanding
what type of gear and player is right for them. This is your A to B transformation.

Within any of those, you can boil them down even further and further until you’re able
to choose what exact topic you want to cover in your content.
