INTRODUCTION

The National Service Scheme (NSS), established in 1969, is a large Indian student-
volunteering program. It instills social responsibility and community service in students
(from 11th grade onwards) through voluntary participation. Its motto, "Not Me, But You,"
emphasizes prioritizing community well-being.

NSS fosters character development by engaging volunteers in various service activities.

These activities build leadership skills, teamwork, and empathy while instilling Gandhian
values like national integration, social harmony, and service to society.

Volunteers tackle diverse needs, engaging in social service initiatives like literacy
campaigns and environmental protection efforts. They also participate in disaster relief
and national integration programs that promote cultural understanding across India.

Over the years, the NSS has impacted millions, leaving a lasting impression on both
students and communities. It remains a key platform for fostering civic engagement,
social responsibility, and personal growth among young Indians.

ACTIVITY - 01
ORGANIC FARMING, INDIAN AGRICULTURE
(PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE) CONNECTIVITY
FOR MARKETING

As part of the National Service Scheme (NSS) initiative, we conducted a study on organic
farming, Indian agriculture (past, present, and future), and connectivity for marketing in
Jagalur village, located in Davanagere district, Karnataka. Agriculture is the primary
occupation of the villagers, with crops such as ragi, jowar, groundnut, and pulses being
widely cultivated. However, due to soil degradation and excessive use of chemical
fertilizers, the village is facing declining productivity.

1.1 ORGANIC FARMING

Organic farming is a sustainable method of cultivation that avoids synthetic chemicals

and focuses on natural fertilizers, crop rotation, and biological pest control. Currently,
only a few farmers in Jagalur practice organic farming due to a lack of awareness and
access to organic inputs. Farmers mainly rely on chemical-based fertilizers and pesticides,
which, while increasing yield in the short term, have long-term negative effects on soil
fertility.

During our interaction with farmers, we highlighted the benefits of organic farming, such
as improved soil health, reduced production costs, and better market value for organic
produce. We also conducted an awareness session on compost preparation, biofertilizers,
and intercropping techniques to help farmers transition toward organic farming.

NSS Activity
Program
1.2 INDIAN AGRICULTURE: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

In the past, agriculture in Jagalur was primarily rain-fed, with traditional methods like
bullock plowing and natural fertilizers. Farmers grew food crops mainly for self-
consumption and relied on local markets for surplus trade. Over time, the introduction of
hybrid seeds, mechanized farming, and chemical fertilizers significantly increased
productivity. The Mid-Day Meal Scheme and government subsidies encouraged farmers
to adopt modern practices.

Currently, the village faces challenges such as erratic rainfall, soil depletion, and market
dependency. Many farmers struggle with low profitability due to high input costs and
poor price realization. Government initiatives like PM-KISAN, Soil Health Card, and the
National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) have provided some relief, but implementation
remains a challenge due to lack of awareness.

Looking ahead, precision farming, drip irrigation, and AI-based monitoring could
revolutionize agriculture in the village. Encouraging farmers to adopt organic practices
and participate in Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) will be crucial in ensuring long-
term sustainability and profitability.

1.3 MARKET CONNECTIVITY AND CHALLENGES

A major challenge faced by farmers in Jagalur is access to profitable markets. Currently,

most farmers sell their produce through middlemen at local APMC (Agricultural Produce
Market Committee) yards, leading to low price realization. Additionally, poor road
infrastructure and inadequate storage facilities result in post- harvest losses.

To address this, we suggested better utilization of e-NAM, which allows farmers to

connect directly with buyers through an online platform. We also emphasized the
importance of forming Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) to collectively bargain for
better prices and access government schemes. Encouraging direct-to-consumer sales
through organic markets and cooperative societies can further improve farmers’ income.

Dept. of CS&E, BIET, Davanagere Page 3

NSS Activity
Program
1.4 IMPLEMENTATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

During our visit, we proposed the following implementation strategies:

1. Training programs on organic farming: Conduct regular workshops in

collaboration with agricultural universities.
2. Creating awareness about e-NAM and market linkages: Educate farmers on
digital platforms and direct selling opportunities.
3. Water conservation techniques: Promote rainwater harvesting and drip
irrigation to optimize water usage.
4. Strengthening rural infrastructure: Advocate for better road connectivity
and storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses.
5. Encouraging government scheme participation: Assist farmers in enrolling
for subsidies and support programs.

1.5 CONCLUSION

Our NSS visit to Jagalur village highlighted the potential for organic farming and modern
agricultural practices to transform rural livelihoods. While challenges such as low
awareness, market dependency, and erratic weather patterns persist, adopting sustainable
farming techniques and improving market connectivity can significantly enhance farmers'
income. Through continued efforts, including training programs, digital market linkages,
and government support, Jagalur can emerge as a model village for organic and
sustainable farming in Davanagere district.

WASTE MANAGEMENT– PUBLIC, PRIVATE AND GOVT

ORGANIZATION, 5 R’S

Waste management is a crucial aspect of maintaining a clean and sustainable

environment, especially in rural areas. As part of our NSS initiative, we conducted a
waste management awareness and implementation program at Taralabalu Krushi Kendra,
Davanagere. The aim was to understand the existing waste disposal methods, educate
farmers and villagers about proper waste management, and introduce sustainable
practices based on the 5 R’s—Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle.

2.1 WASTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AT TARALABALU

KRUSHI KENDRA

Taralabalu Krushi Kendra is a well-known agricultural research and training center that
provides guidance to farmers on sustainable farming techniques. During our visit, we
observed their existing waste management practices, which include:

 Organic waste composting from farm residues and food waste.

 Segregation of dry and wet waste at collection points.
 Minimal plastic usage within the premises.

While the center has implemented some good practices, we identified areas where
additional efforts could enhance waste management efficiency.

2.2 ROLE OF PUBLIC, PRIVATE, AND GOVERNMENT
ORGANIZATIONS IN WASTE MANAGEMENT

a) Public Sector Involvement

Local governing bodies, such as the Gram Panchayat and municipal authorities, are
responsible for village waste collection and disposal. However, in surrounding villages,
we observed issues such as:

 Lack of door-to-door waste collection, leading to open dumping.

 Limited awareness of waste segregation and proper disposal methods.

To address this, we suggested:

 Installing separate bins for dry and wet waste at strategic locations within
the Kendra and nearby villages.
 Conducting regular awareness programs for farmers and village residents.
 Encouraging household composting for organic waste.

b) Private Sector Contribution

Private organizations play a key role in waste management through recycling and
sustainable waste disposal solutions. During our program, we discussed potential
collaborations with Hasiru Dala, an NGO working on waste management in Karnataka.
They focus on:

 Recycling plastic and e-waste through decentralized waste collection units.

 Training local waste collectors in effective waste segregation and disposal
techniques.
 Promoting waste-based entrepreneurship by converting waste into reusable
products.

We proposed that Taralabalu Krushi Kendra partner with such organizations to

implement plastic waste collection and recycling initiatives.
