24
1.8 LEVERAGING ONDC

In order to facilitate convenient and efficient ticketing options to metro commuters, DMRC
has introduced QR code based mobile ticketing, wherein commuters are able to buy QR
code tickets using a smart mobile phone and travel in Metro by validating the mobile QR at
AFC Gates.

Taking next step towards the digitalization efforts, DMRC is integrating the DMRC MOBILE
QR code ticketing with ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce).

ONDC aims to integrate the service of various metro rail corporations across different cities
into the ONDC network which would potentially enable every ONDC protocol enabled
consumer-facing app to sell metro tickets. This initiative will further facilitate various options/
mobile apps to sell DMRC metro tickets.

1.9 CARBON LITE METRO TRAVEL

Metro Rail is considered to be one of the most environment-

friendly modes of transportation. Every time a passenger
travels by metro train instead of a road-based motor
vehicle, he/she saves on carbon emissions. However,
passengers are generally not aware of their contribution
towards addressing the most challenging issue faced
today, which is climate change.
With a deep-rooted commitment to environmental
preservation, DMRC has taken step to raise awareness
among passengers about the substantial carbon footprint
reduction achieved by opting for the eco-friendly Delhi
Metro. Through this digital initiative, passengers are
informed about the average amount of Carbon Dioxide
(CO2) emissions they save during their metro journeys in
comparison to road-based motor vehicles. This statistic
is prominently displayed on both paper and digital QR
tickets, ensuring widespread awareness of the positive
Figure 1.21 Carbon Saving
impact of sustainable public transport. shows on each QR ticket

25
Digitalization and Automation in Delhi Metro Rail Corporation

Methodology
XX A study was done in this regard by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), which has
estimated the net carbon emission a passenger saves by using Delhi Metro instead of a
raod vehicle. As part of the study, TERI estimated the CO2 emissions per passenger-km by
Delhi Metro and five motorized modes of road transport, namely:

Bus Private car Cab/Taxi Auto-Rickshaw Two-wheeler

XX TERI further estimated the weighted average CO2 emission from road-based transportation
systems based on the modal split of these modes of transportation in Delhi
XX As per the study, by using the metro rail for travel in place of a road vehicle, a passenger
saves about 32.39 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Based on this factor and the average distance
travelled by the passenger, the amount of CO2 emission saved is printed on the QR ticket
XX Leveraging this data and considering the passenger’s average travel distance, the QR ticket proudly
inform, “Congratulations! You are saving around xxx gm CO2 emission” providing tangible
evidence of the passenger’s contribution to a greener future
XX This is an important step in making the citizens aware of the importance of sustainable public
transport modes when vehicular emissions are a major challenge for the country as a whole. This
forward-thinking by DMRC stands as a resounding call to action, urging citizens to make informed
choices for sustainable public transportation and embrace the Delhi Metro as a means to actively
combat climate change. By displaying emission savings directly on tickets, DMRC is empowering
passengers to be conscious contributors to a cleaner, more environmentally conscious future

Delhi Metro’s Phase-IV and Patna Metro projects are being monitored digitally through
indigenous custom-made software- STAMP (System for Tracking and Monitoring Projects).

Till Phase 3, DMRC’s project monitoring was being done through offline mode. The two
dimensional drawings were being prepared in AutoCAD and the payments were done in
physical mode.

In a major initiative towards digitalizing its functioning, DMRC, for monitoring the progress
of its Phase 4 corridors and Patna Metro, has implemented custom-made project monitoring
software known as STAMP (System for Tracking and Monitoring Projects).

In place of 2D drawings, 3D BIM Modeling has been adopted in which all the features of
structure including type of materials and color scheme can be viewed before execution and
ensure better clash detection among services of various disciplines i.e. Civil, E&M, S&T etc.

The payments to vendors/contractors which were being done through physical mode are
now being done online through Vendor Payment Portal (VPP).
