Rabbit: Digestive system

- Consist of alimentary canal and digestive glands

A. Alimentary canal
1. Mouth
- Bounded by soft, fleshy and movable lips
- Inner surface with opening of labial glands to keep lips moist
- Upper lip divided by median vertical cleft which keep upper incisor exposed (hare cleft)
2. Vestibule
- Space between mouth and teeth
3. Buccal cavity/ oral cavity
(i) Palate
- Palate forms roof of oral cavity, with transverse ridge called palatal rugae to
prevent slipping of food (grass)
- Posterior part soft and ends as small flap or uvula
(ii) Tongue
- Large, mobile and muscular
- Helps in mixing of food and saliva
(iii) Teeth
- Teeth thecodont and diphyodont
- Teeth of upper jaw on premaxillae and maxilla and teeth of lower jaw on dentary
- Incisors long chisel like for cutting food, canines absent
- Premolar and molar grinders
- Dental formula I 2/1, C 0/0, pm 3/2, m 3/3 = 28
- Space between incisor and premolar called diastema
4. Pharynx
- Divided into three parts
- Nasopharynx receive opening of Eustachian canal and nasal passage
- Oropharynx receive opening of buccal cavity
- Laryngopharynx opens into oesophagus by gullet and larynx by glottis
5. Oesophagus
- Long, narrow and elastic tube to connect
pharynx and stomach
6. Stomach
- Broadest part of alimentary canal
- Divided into cardiac, fundic and pyloric
part
- Helps in storage, mechanical churning and
partial digestion of food
7. Small Intestine
(a) Duodenum- Smallest part, U shaped, receive bile and pancreatic duct, contains
intestinal and Brunner's gland
(b) Jejunum and ileum- Two internally distinct part, internal lining raised into villi.
Terminal part of ileum expanded as sacculus rotundus
8. Caecum
- At the junction of ileum and colon as blind pouch
- End terminates into vermiform appendix
9. Large intestine
- Divided into colon and rectum
- Rectum gives beaded appearance due to faecal pellets
10. Anus
- Terminal part and guarded by anal sphincter
B. Digestive glands
1. Salivary gland
- Four pairs of salivary gland
- Parotid at the base of pinna, infra orbital below orbit,
sub mandibular near angle of mandible and sublingual
below tongue
- Helps in lubrication of food and partial digestion
2. Liver
- Largest gland with five lobes
- Three lobes on left side i.e. Spigelian, left central and left
lateral
- Two lobes on right side i.e. caudate and right central/cystic
- Hepatic duct from each lobe and cystic duct from gall
bladder unite to form bile duct which opens into duodenum
3. Pancreas
- Irregularly branched pinkish gland in duodenal loop
- Secrete pancreatic juice
