The vast majority of scaled software development endeavors face a lot of both complexity and
complication. You can take action to simplify complication (like IKEA furniture…lots of parts and steps but
ultimately perfectly knowable if you care to in advance). Your only play for complexity is to embrace
continuous learning and responsiveness.
Agile is antithetical to the discipline of project management by the very nature of the problem it seeks to
optimize for. You cannot predict and plan for overcoming complexity. You realize it through action.
Lack of predictability is tough for many orgs and senior leaders with planned budgets and ROI demands
to cope with. An org may decide to invest upfront to simplify complication and creat some incremental
predictability. The only antidote for the complex aspects of the endeavor (which also tend to be the
hardest to conceptualize) is to just get started and make progress. Yet, agility can be a make-or-break
organizational discipline, esp long term when the shape of various complexities faced becomes realized.
