Class 12 Biology - Chapter 2: Human Reproduction (NCERT Line-by-Line Notes)
1. Introduction
Humans reproduce sexually and give birth to babies (viviparous). Reproduction includes gametogenesis,
fertilisation, implantation, pregnancy, and parturition.
2. Male Reproductive System
Located in the pelvic region. Includes:
- Testes: in scrotum, produce sperm and testosterone.
- Duct system: Seminiferous tubules -> Rete testis -> Vasa efferentia -> Epididymis -> Vas deferens ->
Ejaculatory duct -> Urethra.
- Accessory glands: Seminal vesicles (fructose-rich fluid), Prostate (motility fluid), Bulbourethral glands
(lubrication mucus).
- Penis: external organ to deliver sperm.
3. Female Reproductive System
Includes:
- Ovaries: produce ova and hormones.
- Fallopian Tubes: Infundibulum -> Ampulla (fertilisation site) -> Isthmus.
- Uterus: Muscular organ; layers: Perimetrium, Myometrium, Endometrium.
- Cervix: Connects uterus to vagina.
- Vagina: Receives penis and acts as birth canal.
4. Gametogenesis
Spermatogenesis: Spermatogonia -> Primary spermatocyte -> Secondary spermatocyte -> Spermatid ->
Sperm.
Sperm: Head (nucleus + acrosome), Middle piece (mitochondria), Tail (movement).
Oogenesis: Oogonia -> Primary oocyte (paused till puberty) -> Secondary oocyte + polar body -> Ovum (after
fertilisation).

5. Menstrual Cycle
Average 28 days:
1. Menstrual Phase (Day 1-5): Endometrial lining sheds.
2. Follicular Phase (6-13): Estrogen rises, follicle grows.
3. Ovulation (Day 14): LH surge causes egg release.
4. Luteal Phase (15-28): Progesterone prepares uterus.
If no fertilisation, menstruation restarts.
6. Fertilisation & Implantation
Fertilisation occurs in ampulla of fallopian tube. Sperm uses acrosome to enter egg -> zygote -> blastocyst ->
implants into uterus (endometrium).
7. Pregnancy & Embryonic Development
Zygote forms 3 layers:
- Ectoderm: Skin, brain
- Mesoderm: Muscles, bones
- Endoderm: Lungs, liver
Placenta: Provides nutrients, removes waste, secretes hCG, hPL, progesterone, estrogen, relaxin.
8. Parturition & Lactation
Parturition: Birth of baby triggered by oxytocin and uterine contractions.
Lactation: Prolactin produces milk; Oxytocin helps in milk ejection.
